Ian_Lee Posted June 21, 2007 at 09:49 PM Report Posted June 21, 2007 at 09:49 PM I just browsed thru China's provincial government websites (as linked by Ningxia's government web page): http://www.nx.gov.cn/information.do?method=articleView&id=5ae240be0f2841e9010f2acc6afe002e And some of the provinces seem very eager to attract investment/tourism from outside Mainland based on the languages they provide on their webpages: Provinces that provide webpages in 4 languages/scripts: Xinjiang -- Simplified, Traditional, English, Uighur Ningxia -- Simplified, Traditional, English, Japanese Zhejiang -- Simplified, Traditional, English, Japanese Provinces that provide webpages in 3 languages/scripts: Tibet -- Simplified, Tibetan, English Hainan -- Simplified, Traditional, English Hunan -- Simplified, Traditional, English Jilin -- Simplified, Traditional, English Jiangsu -- Simplified, Traditional, English Provinces that provide English webpage in addition to their Simplified script webpage: Anhui, Gansu, Guizhou Provinces that provide Traditional script webpage in addition to their Simplified script webpage: Jiangxi, Henan, Sichuan, Qinghai Provinces that provide ONLY Simplified script webpage: Shanxi, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Fujian, Shandong, Hubei, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Yunnan __________________________________________________ It seems that more open provinces like the coastal provinces and the frontier provinces are more interested in attracting investment/tourism from outside Mainland while those impoverished inland and rust-belt provinces are not that eager. But Fujian province, which is on the forefront of cross-strait exchange, doesn't even have a webpage in Traditional script! And Hainan seems more catered to foreign investment than Guangdong by providing webpage in English! And Xinjiang and Tibet provide webpages in Uighur and Tibetan while Inner Mongolia doesn't bother to provide it in Mongol, why? One last note -- the Qinghai webpage is actually a porno website. That IT guy in Ningxia must be dozing when he linked all these webpages! Quote
simonlaing Posted June 22, 2007 at 07:42 AM Report Posted June 22, 2007 at 07:42 AM It is interesting that the qingxia has so many languages as it isn't the richest of provinces. Sometimes the web page also reflects the attitude of the provincial government. Perhaps the Fujian government has alot of military people in it and that is affecting the translation. Quite interesting though. have fun, Simon:) Quote
