chinesetools Posted July 16, 2007 at 09:25 PM Report Posted July 16, 2007 at 09:25 PM People who use iGoogle (the personalized Google homepage) or the Google desktop will be familiar with "gadgets", small tools that can be added to the homepage or the desktop sidebar. I've been working on a "Chinese Lunar Calendar Date" gadget and I'm looking for people to help test it out. It shows today's date in the lunar calendar (the year stem/branch plus the month and day). The gadget link is http://www.mandarintools.com/lunarcalendar.xml If you do encounter a problem, please let me know: your operating system, browser, if you can view Chinese in other programs. Suggestions for improvement also welcome. Instructions for adding it to the desktop are at http://www.google.com/apis/gadgets/publish.html#Other_Products Adding it to iGoogle: 1. Go to http://www.google.com/ig. 2. To add a gadget, you must have an iGoogle page. If you don't already have one, you must create one by clicking Get started. Then sign in with an existing Google Account, or create a new one. 3. Once you have an iGoogle page, you can add gadgets to it by clicking Add stuff in the upper right corner. 4. Click Add by URL (next to the "Search Homepage Content" button). 5. In the Add by URL text box, enter "http://www.mandarintools.com/lunarcalendar.xml", and click Add. 6. Click Back to homepage, where you will see that the gadget has been added. Quote
jonaspony Posted July 17, 2007 at 12:36 AM Report Posted July 17, 2007 at 12:36 AM Be glad to help, but the link to the gadget returned only this notice: This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. Quote
chinesetools Posted July 17, 2007 at 01:40 AM Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 at 01:40 AM The XML file by itself doesn't do anything. It needs to be used through iGoogle (personalized Google homepage) or Google Desktop sidebar. Quote
roddy Posted July 17, 2007 at 12:20 PM Report Posted July 17, 2007 at 12:20 PM I don't use the Google homepage, but I have an account so I tested it out for you. Works fine, currently giving me 丁亥 六月四日 July 17, 2007 The only minor issue is that after step 5 you are warned that any settings may be available to the gadget's developer - obviously no major issue but you might want to mention it in the instructions in case it puts anyone off.
