david lam Posted July 24, 2007 at 09:46 PM Report Posted July 24, 2007 at 09:46 PM Hi there all. Could anyone tell me the difference between these two words for 'success Cheng2jiu4 and cheng2gong1. Sorry, I don't have Chinese characters on this keyboard. Cheers! Quote
muyongshi Posted July 24, 2007 at 10:57 PM Report Posted July 24, 2007 at 10:57 PM According to my understanding 成就 refers to a massive success. Something worked hard for and took a lot of time. My professor that has several books published, 600+ papers, and won many awards for them has 成就, whereas me succeeding on a test is anything but 成就. So things like a nobel prize would be 成就. 成功 just is a general word and can be used in pretty much any situation. Quote
rootfool Posted July 25, 2007 at 12:17 AM Report Posted July 25, 2007 at 12:17 AM At first, "成就" is only a noun means "achievment",but "成功" can be used as a noun or a verb.for example:你成功了(v.)?成功乃失败之母(n.) According to my understanding 成就 refers to a massive success. Something worked hard for and took a lot of time. It's right.But sometimes this word can be used like this: 不得不说,这也算是一点小小的成就吧。 Quote
skylee Posted July 25, 2007 at 01:49 PM Report Posted July 25, 2007 at 01:49 PM "成就" is only a noun means "achievment" I don't think so. Take a look -> http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/cgi-bin/agrep-lindict?query=%b4%4e&category=wholerecord (1) V.t., accomplish, achieve, realize: 成就 get s.t. done. Also this -> http://140.111.34.46/cgi-bin/dict/GetContent.cgi?Database=dict&DocNum=116490&GraphicWord=yes&QueryString=成就 完成、造就。漢書˙卷五十四˙蘇建傳:武父子亡功德,皆為陛下所成就。儒林外史˙第二十一回:而今多虧了你這外公公替你成就了親事,你已是有了房屋了。 And this -> http://www.baidu.com/baidu?ie=gb2312&ct=1048576&cl=3&word=%B3%C9%BE%CD+ 2.to achieve; to accomplish; to bring home the bacon This too -> http://www.fzepc.com/chinapoem/word.asp 成就chéngjiù (1) [achieve;accomplish]∶完成;成功 不是一朝一夕所能成就的 (2) [help]∶造就;成全 武父子亡功德,皆陛下所成就。――《汉书·李广苏建传》 她也未尝不愿意,我看你还是成就了他们吧 Quote
