freefall Posted July 28, 2007 at 06:35 AM Report Posted July 28, 2007 at 06:35 AM Dude, roddy, what's up with the chinese-forums.com favicon? Quote
roddy Posted July 28, 2007 at 08:37 AM Report Posted July 28, 2007 at 08:37 AM You tell me. As far as I can see we haven't got one. Quote
madizi Posted July 28, 2007 at 08:42 AM Report Posted July 28, 2007 at 08:42 AM What is favicon? EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon Quote
freefall Posted July 28, 2007 at 01:27 PM Author Report Posted July 28, 2007 at 01:27 PM As far as I can tell we've got one but it's just a transparent image. I think it's time for something more professional. We must define the essence of these forums in a 16px x 16px icon! Quote
roddy Posted July 28, 2007 at 02:51 PM Report Posted July 28, 2007 at 02:51 PM Hmmm, seems you are right. Not sure where that came from. Well, what are you going to do with your 256 pixels? Quote
onebir Posted July 31, 2007 at 05:03 AM Report Posted July 31, 2007 at 05:03 AM How about a "中F" symbol? Perhaps with a curly scientific "f" centred in the "中". I had a couple of attempts (attached). Maybe the background should be the lightest blue used on the forum pages... Quote
Luobot Posted July 31, 2007 at 05:47 AM Report Posted July 31, 2007 at 05:47 AM How about Roddy’s suitcase (in his avatar) with Onebir’s image or the following characters superimposed in red: 中论坛. Quote
onebir Posted July 31, 2007 at 06:05 AM Report Posted July 31, 2007 at 06:05 AM How about Roddy’s suitcase (in his avatar) with Onebir’s image or the following characters superimposed in red: 中论坛. There's only so much you can fit into a 16x16 pixel square! Quote
freefall Posted August 3, 2007 at 02:31 AM Author Report Posted August 3, 2007 at 02:31 AM The reason I want one so bad is because I'm using only favicons in my bookmarks toolbar to save space. (Slightly outdated, I've got lots more icons now!) See the one on the end followed by 'cf'? That used to be my chinese-forums link. Now I've gone ahead and added onebir's icon which is a definite improvement. Quote
adrianlondon Posted November 26, 2007 at 10:15 AM Report Posted November 26, 2007 at 10:15 AM How do you add your own icon to a Firefox bookmark? I hope it's possible without an add-on as I've got enough of those as it is ... Quote
roddy Posted November 26, 2007 at 10:27 AM Report Posted November 26, 2007 at 10:27 AM Ok, I can see why this would be an issue for anyone trying to use only icons in bookmarks and so on, so I've generated a favicon from the first image I had handy. I've been meaning for a while to get a 'proper' logo done for the site so if I get around to that I'll get a favicon done at the same time. Until then, this will suffice. You may need to reload / clear your cache to get it to appear, but it's coming up ok for me. Quote
chenpv Posted November 26, 2007 at 12:59 PM Report Posted November 26, 2007 at 12:59 PM Ahhh.. Nice. Though the favicon is somewhat laterally stretched, which makes you look improperly 'fat' IMHO. Errrr... How about your head alone in a favicon? That can be more catchy and distinguishable. Quote
thph2006 Posted November 26, 2007 at 07:04 PM Report Posted November 26, 2007 at 07:04 PM onebir, I like that 中f of yours. It's compact but very clear. For anyone who wants to play around a bit here's a link to an online tool for making favicons from image files. http://www.favicon.cc/? I found out by playing with this tool that it's pretty hard to make a favicon that's actually readable at 16x16 pixels. Here are some experiments I did just for fun. Can you guess what they are? Four favicons at the bottom of the post. Spoilers cover the answers. 1. The Great Wall 2. Galaxy in space 3. My grand piano at home! 4. Says 听说. 听 right side up tilted left, 说 upside down tilted right. Quote
Luobot Posted November 27, 2007 at 08:33 AM Report Posted November 27, 2007 at 08:33 AM Actually, I like the favicon just the way it is now. It's totally unique, and I have no trouble identifying it on my bookmarks toolbar without any text. So I would like to cast my vote in favor of keeping it as is. Quote
thph2006 Posted November 27, 2007 at 04:20 PM Report Posted November 27, 2007 at 04:20 PM Wow, I logged into the site this morning and something immediately caught my eye. There's a favicon on the address bar! Looks great, and very easy to find in my bookmarks list now! Thanks! Quote
cdn_in_bj Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:10 AM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:10 AM Have any Firefox users gotten this to work? I still don't see no favicon for this site (though I'm still on version 1.5). I feel like I'm missing out on all the fun! Quote
roddy Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:19 AM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:19 AM Yes, me. Browsers seem to update favicons only when they feel like it though. Hit CTRL+F5, and if that doesn't work try clearing your cache. Failing that, reinstall windows or buy a new computer. Quote
gougou Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:24 AM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:24 AM At home, I cleared my cache and it showed up right away. At work, I did nothing and it showed up automatically after a while. Quote
thph2006 Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:40 AM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:40 AM cdn_in_bj, I think if you have the site bookmarked and you click on the bookmark it will refresh with the favicon. Quote
roddy Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:47 AM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 01:47 AM Also, surely if you just made the site your homepage you could all stop messing around with bookmarks . . . . . Quote
