The character in your second post, 近, means 'close' (as in 'not far', not as in 'not open').

親近 means close as in close friends, and I suppose the meaning can be extended to 'affinity'.

家 means home, not exactely the same as family.

Chinese characters are called "hanzi" (pronounced "han dzer").

Kanji is used to refer to Chinese characters which have been taken and used in Japan. They often don't mean the same thing; they just look the same.

to some extent, you could say family is 家族。

家族 includes all the members in your faimily. It's very common to call all the members with the same family name together with their wives and kids as a 家族。

But 家，you can use it as a part of 家族，you and your parents can be called 家 but couldn't call it 家族。
