Saturday Posted August 15, 2007 at 03:31 PM Report Posted August 15, 2007 at 03:31 PM Dang1ran2 - 当然 Can you use it just as you use "then" in english, or does that confuse the chinese? I mean, using it like this: "then give me a better price" etc. Quote
skylee Posted August 15, 2007 at 03:41 PM Report Posted August 15, 2007 at 03:41 PM No. It does not work. 當然 = of course. Consider using 那麽 in your sentence. Quote
semantic nuance Posted August 15, 2007 at 04:03 PM Report Posted August 15, 2007 at 04:03 PM 當然 means 'of course' or 'sure'. In the case you mentioned, the Chinese equivalent for 'then' can be 那麼. But , 'then' will be translated differently according to different cases as you use in English. It can also be translated as ' 然後', or ' 後來'. But in your sentence, I will use 那麼. Hope it helps! Quote
opper567 Posted August 16, 2007 at 01:36 AM Report Posted August 16, 2007 at 01:36 AM is it an adverb? or a simple response? Quote
mokushiroku Posted August 18, 2007 at 08:18 AM Report Posted August 18, 2007 at 08:18 AM Perhaps you are thinking of "然後", which can mean "then". However, even if this is the word you wanted to say, you still cannot use it in "then give me a better price". Instead, you should use 那. E.g. 那,給我好一點的價錢吧 。 Quote
CyraSafia Posted August 18, 2007 at 01:26 PM Report Posted August 18, 2007 at 01:26 PM 当然 often means "of course" e.g. 我昨天看到的是你吗? -当然 sometimes it also means "however" or "on the other hand" e.g. 这件事主要是你的错,当然,我也有责任 but it can't be used as "then" Quote
limoral Posted August 18, 2007 at 01:51 PM Report Posted August 18, 2007 at 01:51 PM 当然is a complication Quote
