simonlaing Posted August 17, 2007 at 01:38 AM Report Posted August 17, 2007 at 01:38 AM Here's a well written article by espn about the huge differences that you see as you're traveling in China. Anyway some of the discussion on Linfan whether the possibility of some of your cities becoming very developed, and affording A6 Audis and PS3's is worth tremendous coal pollution. Also the Private Gold miner, who operates technically outside the law and whose mines and property could be confiscated for this reason, but can afford a house, a car and decent standard of living, just off the 10 km congested coal highway. Or the pictursque rural village with one well and 70 year old grandmothers working the fields with kids as the Young Adults have left for the cities.Life is hard but the pollution and risks may not be as dangerous. Or if it is worth it to create a silicon valley in scichuan with clean roads and cars, but in the process cutting of Panda reservations. Anyway it seemed well written and provided many interesting insights. Which character in the story would you choose to be? have fun, SImon:) Quote
trien27 Posted August 17, 2007 at 03:25 AM Report Posted August 17, 2007 at 03:25 AM The last character from the ESPN site doesn't exist in Chinese: it's totally made up. take out the radical on the left, then you get bian "side" Attempted to say "Behind the Bamboo Curtain", but the characters beside it correspond with "That last character of Bamboo Panel" Quote
gougou Posted September 22, 2007 at 01:46 PM Report Posted September 22, 2007 at 01:46 PM Finally got around to reading it today. It makes for a very interesting read, and I warmly recommend it. Apart from the things Simon already mentioned, here are two more things I found interesting: - the effects of having a large gap between your urban and rural areas, but showing them the same programs on television - that there are areas in China where even people from Beijing are shocked by the amount of pollution Quote
