adrianlondon Posted September 7, 2007 at 09:05 AM Report Posted September 7, 2007 at 09:05 AM Which is exactly what ruich recommends in post #24 of this thread. he's so smart! ;) Anyone tested it? Quote
muyongshi Posted September 7, 2007 at 09:11 AM Report Posted September 7, 2007 at 09:11 AM It seems to work pretty well. Of course loading time is slow and not sure how it will respond to all sites but I used it with wikipedia and it did fine. Quote
roddy Posted September 7, 2007 at 09:17 AM Report Posted September 7, 2007 at 09:17 AM You usually don't get an error message, just a blank page. The proxy can't help you here as the content (and hence the "bad" words) are the same as they would be from wikipedia. An encrypted (https) proxy will do the trick (edit: Damn you Adrian, you copied my idea and posted it first so nobody could tell). I don't know if there are any free ones, but the paid one I use, proxify.com (use this link if you decide to sign up, lines my pockets) allows it. When that happens on Firefox I get a 'connection to the server was lost' message. I can't remember exactly how it works, but I think there was a technical discussion linked to on here sometime. Basically the firewall does something like send the server a message saying 'hey, stop sending this, we don't need it' and to your computer saying 'sorry, server says no.'. You'll also be prevented from connecting to that server from that IP address for five or ten minutes. Quote

gougou Posted April 1, 2008 at 10:45 AM Report Posted April 1, 2008 at 10:45 AM I can access it again (not the page about what happened in 1989 in the middle of the city, though, so they didn't completely take down the GFW). Let's hope that's not their idea of an april fool's joke. Quote
Rincewind Posted April 1, 2008 at 12:52 PM Report Posted April 1, 2008 at 12:52 PM Ditto on that. I can see wikipedia without using proxies. I wonder what will be next? Will Flickr.com start working again? Quote
madizi Posted April 2, 2008 at 10:32 AM Report Posted April 2, 2008 at 10:32 AM True, true. Wikipedia is unblocked. But just English, Chinese is still blocked. Quote
Rincewind Posted April 2, 2008 at 02:34 PM Report Posted April 2, 2008 at 02:34 PM Seems that posting here has an effect. When I last posted, flickr wasn't working properly. But now I can see all the photos there. Even ones of sensitive events. Quote
liuzhou Posted April 2, 2008 at 02:48 PM Report Posted April 2, 2008 at 02:48 PM Flickr still ain't working down here. Quote

zozzen Posted April 5, 2008 at 10:33 AM Report Posted April 5, 2008 at 10:33 AM It's worked since the April Fool and four days later it still works smoothly. As long as you don't try to access "zh.wikipedia.org", it won't show the message "Connection was reset". Welcome back, wiki! Quote
roddy Posted May 10, 2008 at 01:26 AM Report Posted May 10, 2008 at 01:26 AM Is it just me or is it gone again? Quote
gougou Posted May 10, 2008 at 01:43 AM Report Posted May 10, 2008 at 01:43 AM Still working here. And almost nothing ever works here. Quote
roddy Posted May 10, 2008 at 01:45 AM Report Posted May 10, 2008 at 01:45 AM Hmm, timing out here. Will put it down to local anomalies in the space time continuum. Quote
atitarev Posted August 1, 2008 at 03:12 AM Report Posted August 1, 2008 at 03:12 AM The Chinese Wikipedia and BBC in Chinese should be unblocked now according to the BBC. For how long? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7535280.stm Quote
