yonglin Posted August 26, 2007 at 05:15 PM Report Share Posted August 26, 2007 at 05:15 PM There are about half a zillion of Chinese people who want to learn English on there (mostly from Shanghai for some reason, maybe they feel the need is more urgent) but most of which happily talk to you in Chinese if you know a little. It's great. Beware that you might get A LOT of people contacting you though, since the Chinese/English-speaker ratio is quite skewed. chrix Posted December 13, 2009 at 12:01 PM Report Share Posted December 13, 2009 at 12:01 PM bump. Anyone using this site? I used to, but haven't in a while. There are a lot of Chinese people on there, but the question is if you can use this site for focused language study or whether it's more like a glorified chatroom. taijiphoenix Posted January 8, 2010 at 06:19 PM Report Share Posted January 8, 2010 at 06:19 PM I haven't been able to really use the site for study. If you post a question you will get a lot of responses, so that is good. Other than that, I think most people just want to chat in english. Hobbes828 Posted January 27, 2010 at 10:23 AM Report Share Posted January 27, 2010 at 10:23 AM I know they tried to get more serious with spending points or whatever and have updated the site a bunch... but I tried it quite a while back and it was basically my inbox being filled with 20-30 friend requests every time I logged on to the site with people who wanted to speak English, although they usually would be happy to chat in Chinese as well. I used it for a very short period, added a few people to my MSN list, then got the heck out of there!

Cactus543 Posted February 25, 2010 at 10:35 PM Report Share Posted February 25, 2010 at 10:35 PM I'm pretty it's the same concept as www.livemocha.com
chrix Posted February 25, 2010 at 10:38 PM Report Share Posted February 25, 2010 at 10:38 PM what's going on at italki? It looks like no one is online there any more, they've even started putting the messenger ids on the profiles, so now you can add people without even friending them on italki... is it fizzling out or what? as for livemocha: I had a brief look around there, but the community looked pretty dead to me, so I guess I'll stay with lang-8, interspersed with some doses of italki... New Members 雪花舞 Posted February 6, 2012 at 06:39 AM New Members Report Share Posted February 6, 2012 at 06:39 AM I've tried italki early last year and I'm kind of disappointed with it. I guess because you really can't learn anything. People try to talk to you because they want to learn your language but wouldn't teach you theirs (or at least pretend they will and after you help them, they'd just disappear). So I gave up. Livemocha on the other hand, has lessons that you can do on your own.
