bailandai Posted August 26, 2007 at 09:46 AM Report Posted August 26, 2007 at 09:46 AM Hi I am thinking about coming to China to study Mandarin however I can not decide whether go to Guilin or Nanning. I heard that both cities are very beautiful however I am worried about local dialects. I want to avoid situation of studying Mandarin in a place where everyone speak thier dialect. Thanks for help. liuzhou Posted August 26, 2007 at 03:07 PM Report Posted August 26, 2007 at 03:07 PM I have studied in neither, but I have lived for about 10 years half way between the two. Nanning does have a higher proportion of Cantonese and Zhuang speakers, but it is the capital of the province and many people speak putonghua. Guilin is a much smaller and much more touristy city. It does have it's own Guiliuhua dialect, but most people speak standard. Anyway, what is wrong with learning standard with additional variations. Of course, if you were sensible you would come to Liuzhou and get the best of both worlds! Quote
