csit Posted September 9, 2007 at 07:14 PM Report Posted September 9, 2007 at 07:14 PM China Books and Periodicals has MP3 files of several titles available for free download. You can see the list here: http://www.chinabooks.com/cart/home.php?cat=11&sort=price&sort_direction=0 If that doesn't work, select "Language Learning" on the left-hand-side menu, then choose MP3. The files are delivered in a ZIP archive through a link sent to an email address that you provide. The titles are SPRING (MP3) AUTUMN (MP3) Abridged and simplified edition of the classic Ba Jin story. DRINKING WITH THE MOON (MP3) GATEWAY TO THE CHINESE CLASSICS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO LITERARY CHINESE (MP3) PRACTICAL BUSINESS CHINESE (MP3) ESSENTIAL CHINESE FOR TRAVELERS (MP3) [This seems like a list of vocabulary and phrases in Chinese and English.] Quote
atitarev Posted September 10, 2007 at 12:01 AM Report Posted September 10, 2007 at 12:01 AM The files are huge! I don't know what I am downloading but the size has reached 158 MB so far (as I type). They should at least hint at the size of the download and the contents (number of files). Hopefully it's worth it Thanks. -- Update: the total zip file is 270 MB, contains 6 mp3 files. it would be much more valuable with a transcript Quote
JimmySeal Posted September 10, 2007 at 05:57 PM Report Posted September 10, 2007 at 05:57 PM I think the idea is that customers can download accompanying audio to go with the books they order, and the mp3s are free to avoid a rigmarole with authorization and passwords and other stuff. Probably not very useful without the accompanying books, as atitarev says. Quote

wrbt Posted January 30, 2008 at 05:23 PM Report Posted January 30, 2008 at 05:23 PM Seems like a great deal, but upon searching that site I can't seem to find the corresponding books Autumn and Spring. Are they sold from that site and I'm missing something? Quote

wrbt Posted January 30, 2008 at 06:03 PM Report Posted January 30, 2008 at 06:03 PM Those links take me to the MP3 files. If I wish to buy the corresponding book to read first where is that? Thanks for help. Quote
gougou Posted January 31, 2008 at 01:10 AM Report Posted January 31, 2008 at 01:10 AM I can't seem to find the corresponding books Autumn and Spring. Are they sold from that site and I'm missing something? You apparently did miss something, namely the first few posts of this thread:total zip file is 270 MB, contains 6 mp3 files. it would be much more valuable with a transcript I think the idea is that customers can download accompanying audio to go with the books they order Quote
wrbt Posted January 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM Report Posted January 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM No, I didn't miss that. I understand one can download the MP3s and I see the links leading to them, I understand that it's an audio only download that can accompany books one orders. My question is... where does one order the books? The physical, page turning, sitting on a shelf books? Quote
Luobot Posted January 31, 2008 at 09:00 PM Report Posted January 31, 2008 at 09:00 PM Strangely enough, I didn't see it on Chinabooks, either, but Spring is here and Autumn is here (when available). Quote
gougou Posted February 1, 2008 at 01:09 AM Report Posted February 1, 2008 at 01:09 AM My question is... where does one order the books? The physical, page turning, sitting on a shelf books?I see, misunderstood you there. You can also find it online if that helps. Quote
Radial Posted February 1, 2008 at 02:25 AM Report Posted February 1, 2008 at 02:25 AM Spring and Autumn are both published by Sinolingua... You should be able to get more information on these books at www.sinolingua.com.cn Having said that... I tried going there today and could not get to the English site and was not able to search for these books. These are abridged versions of these two books with a vocabulary list after each chapter. They are part of a series which includs "Family" and "The Besieged City". Quote
wrbt Posted November 13, 2008 at 08:42 PM Report Posted November 13, 2008 at 08:42 PM As an update here the (actual) abridged books Family, Spring, and Autumn are now available at chinabooks. Strangely the first in the trilogy Family doesn't seem to have the MP3 file anywhere that I can find it. Quote
wrbt Posted November 19, 2008 at 04:31 PM Report Posted November 19, 2008 at 04:31 PM (edited) Ok I just received the first in this trilogy, Family. The quality of the book is pretty good in terms of font & material. I don't like that it's got pinyin inline underneath the characters, I find that distracting and prefer on a separate page or not at all. The text itself is supposed to be suitable for a 2000 word vocabulary, I've no idea how many words I know but consider myself (forever it seems) intermediate level and a quick glance found it to be pretty digestable. Any words that they consider "extra hard" are numbered and listed with definition in the margin of same page, so that's pretty nice no flipping to some massive glossary in the back or at end of chapter. A CD with MP3 is included with the book. I know you can download that too but it's a nice extra. If you guys/gals want I can scan a couple pages in to upload here so you can get an idea how it is. I'll also be able to offer a better review after diving in further. Edited November 19, 2008 at 07:33 PM by wrbt Quote
roddy Posted November 20, 2008 at 12:18 AM Report Posted November 20, 2008 at 12:18 AM That version of 围城 (which Radial mentions as part of the series) was handed out as part of the Free Textbooks adventure. You can see xtenhome's thoughts on the book, along with some rather large images. There are more pictures here. Quote
elina Posted November 20, 2008 at 02:47 AM Report Posted November 20, 2008 at 02:47 AM If you guys/gals want I can scan a couple pages in to upload here so you can get an idea how it is. No need for that trouble, on our site we have excerpts for all the books in the Abridged Chinese Classic Series since several months ago, including Family. You can see xtenhome's thoughts [/url']on the book, along with some rather large images. Welcome back to Beijing, and glad to have the honor to correct your above little-error-link into this right one: "You can see xtenhome's thoughts on the book, along with some rather large images." wrbt Posted November 20, 2008 at 02:50 PM Report Posted November 20, 2008 at 02:50 PM Yup, that looks like the same stuff alright. Is it just me or is the woman reading one of the people from NPCR? Quote

I wonder if most people find it to be a hindrance? Perhaps if the publishers knew about it, they would change this practice. Quote
