刺 when it means fishbone is one of the first words you'll learn eating away with friends in China as you helplessly try to pick the bones out with your chopsticks.

艮 gen3, blunt.

After seeing Roddy's 鯁 which I didn't know, I suddenly recalled this other word with similar pronunciation I had heard lots of times but didn't know how to write. After asking some Chinese people, it came out they didn't know either how to write it exactly (someone wrote 茛), so I looked up in the dictionary and found out that that character is the one used.

Below is an example of a typical sentence using this word.

这孩子真艮。

Pompom - from a CGTV documentary program about a Long March soldier who had a woven pair of shoes made from jute with silk Pompoms made for him by his fiancee.

Had to look it up, so I though I would share.

The other day I learned/realised, after 20 years of studying Chinese, that 权 and 劝 are in fact different characters. I had somehow never seen them in the same room together, so to speak.

权 quán power, might; right

劝 quàn try to persuade, encourage, comfort.

骎骎 - swiftly, like a galloping horse. I did once try to use that in conversation with a Dalian taxi driver, but he just gave me a kiss.
