Lu Posted July 8, 2009 at 06:59 PM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 06:59 PM 丹凤眼 dan1feng4yan3 almond-shaped eyes. Apparently one guy in the Zhu Wen story has those. I had to check google if 丹凤眼 is a word that can be used on men, and it is. I still don't quite know what they actually are, though, I don't recall ever meeting someone and noticing their almond-shaped eyes. Quote
imron Posted July 9, 2009 at 12:56 AM Report Posted July 9, 2009 at 12:56 AM If you remember sometime around the Olympics, the Spanish basketball (?) team caused a bit of a stir for publishing a photo where they were all making their eyes look slanted by pulling on them with their fingers? That shape is 丹凤眼. Quote
Lu Posted July 9, 2009 at 01:44 PM Report Posted July 9, 2009 at 01:44 PM (edited) Slanty eyes = almond-shaped eyes? Okay... In the end I translated that the guy with those eyes, and a 高鼻梁 too, had 'a pretty face', because it was the most straightforward way to explain to a foreign audience what the author actually meant. Edit: And a random word, from the same (mainland) story: 學潮 xue2chao2 student protests, here: TAM-protests. First I found 'student strike', but then I started thinking, wait a minute, checked google in fanti, and there it was. Edited July 9, 2009 at 04:26 PM by Lu Quote
