trien27 Posted December 12, 2009 at 07:38 PM Report Posted December 12, 2009 at 07:38 PM (edited) In Hong Kong the youngest son/daughter is called 孻仔 / 孻女. that's also a nice character. (I suppose 盡 is not pronounced anywhere close to nái in Cantonese) 孻 is a semantic-semantic compound, not a semantic-phonetic compound, so that's why 盡 is not the phonetic for 孻 ! 孻 is pronounced "lai1" in Cantonese, which is nowhere close to 盡, which is pronounced "dzoen6", not nái in Cantonese. They do list the Simplified form in my Cantonese dictionary, but I can't find it online? It's lai2 in Mandarin?! Edited December 12, 2009 at 08:01 PM by trien27 Quote
chrix Posted December 12, 2009 at 08:00 PM Report Posted December 12, 2009 at 08:00 PM 孻 is a semantic-semantic compound, not a semantic-phonetic compound. Yes, that's why I meant. Quote
