skylee Posted May 9, 2012 at 11:21 AM Report Share Posted May 9, 2012 at 11:21 AM 點描法 = Pointillism Both the English and Chinese terms are new to me. I understood the English term instantly because I had seen such paintings (thus I could have seen this term before). I had to look up the Chinese term, though. creamyhorror Posted May 14, 2012 at 05:59 AM Report Share Posted May 14, 2012 at 05:59 AM 从实招来 My mother says this sometimes and I couldn't find the full phrase in my standard dictionaries. Apparently it's an established expression, though: 《水浒传》第二六回:“你把我的哥哥性命,怎地谋害了,从实招了,我便饶你。”《红楼梦》第九四回:“还是 李紈 探春 从实的告诉了 王夫人 一遍。” 许地山 《凶手》第二幕:“你与我从实招来,若有一句谎言,难免受刑。” I know the individual meanings of 从实 (truthfully) and 招 (confess), so could guess the meaning of the phrase (if it weren't obvious from context anyway), but couldn't find a definition of the complete phrase in Zdic or Nciku. I finally found it in the TW MOE dictionary: 奉命做原原本本、詳實的陳述。初刻拍案驚奇˙卷二十六:「上天對我說道:『殺井家婦人杜氏的,是這個大覺。』快從實招來。」老殘遊記˙第十八回:「從實招來,是誰教你誣告的。」
