I'm very slowly trying to read Alice in Wonderland in Chinese so this is the sentence I'm trying to understand.

做一只雏菊花环的乐趣,能不能抵得上摘雏菊的麻烦呢?

My first question is 的. I know its general use in possession and attribution, but I don't understand its use in this sentence.

做一只雏菊花环的乐趣

making a daisy wreath 的 enjoyment/pleasure.

I'm not sure how the 的 connects those two words.

Is it, the enjoyment OF making a daisy wreath?

2. The second part of the sentence is also pretty confusing too.

能不能抵得上摘雏菊的麻烦呢

can it or can it not 抵得上 the trouble of picking daisies.

what does 抵得上 mean?

,Thanks

part 1, yes, the enjoyment of making ....

Unless I am completely mistaken

part2. 得上 -- you might start off thinking this has the meaning "able to get on top of" or "able to pass", but given the context it's more like "able to be sufficient, "

抵 has entry "hold up; on the whole; push against; to support; to resist; to reach; to arrive; to mortgage." in mandarintools.com

I'm going with support, prop up.

so roughly it's "does the enjoyment ...., justify the trouble of ...."

One of the first books I ever bought in China was a bilingual version of Alice in Wonderland (see for example here). You might benefit from getting one of these as well.

Although I have to say that I didn't like the Chinese version too much and just read the English after first couple of pages...

Thank you kudra!

Gougou,

I don't mind the Chinese version so much. Kind of like doing a jigsaw puzzle. I'm reading Alice in Wonderland so I'll have enough grammar and vocabulary to read Wolf Totem. Maybe next year, I'll be able to read James Joyce in Chinese. :D

抵得上 - match up to

imagine something propping on one side, you need an equal op reaction the other side :D
