Smartphone in Shanghai

Recommended Posts

I am about to buy a new cellphone. Right now I do have a really crappy chinese nokia cellphone. I can pretty much right Hanzi and English, but without T9, with it. Now I am thinking about buying a new phone.

I would really love to get one which is able to communicate with my Mac and also supports PlecoDict. As far as I know is PlecoDict the best Dictionary you can get. The Dictionaries usually installed on phones in China are in my opinion really crappy because whenever you enter an English word you just get back Hanzi without any Pinyin.

So I was thinking about buying a Palm Treo 680 here in Shanghai. I am not really convinced by Palm but I guess it is the only smartphone supporting Mac and PlecoDict. But if you guys know of any other phone let me know!

Basically my question is, where is the best place in Shanghai to buy Palms and what kind of price is reasonable? Do you think buying a Palm in Japan is a lot cheaper? Any other smartphone you could recommend?

Thanks alot in advance!

Palm or Pocket PC in Shanghai?

You can probably get a HK version of Treo 680 (i.e. CJKOS pre-installed) in Shanghai for about RMB 3200-3400.

For more about Treo 680, see these threads (or you can search for "treo"):

I got my Palm in Shanghai at the Saibo Digital Plaza (Huhuai Lu) at a stall called PDA Dream. I thought the price was reasonable. I got a Tungsten E and I can't remember exactly what I paid, but I believe it was in the range of rmb 1200-1400 - it was about the same as I saw on Amazon US at the time I purchased it (April 2007). I did bargain a bit. Overall, I think China is not the best place to buy electronics, but if you want a Palm it can be had.

I highly recommend PlecoDict, btw.
