My favorite question that I always got was how I got my skin to be so white. Now, I'm glow-in-the-dark pale, so I am paler than most. I usually laughed and told them that my ancestors were Irish, that's how.

And one old lady (I think she was a math professor) really wanted me to tell her that Americans 看不起 China and Chinese people, but at the time I didn't understand what 看不起 even meant, so I didn't answer. I kind of wish I had understood, because I hope my lack of response didn't imply to her that Americans look down on Chinese - because in my experience anyway, they definitely don't.

Well we defintiley don't 看不起 them in my experience {then again I have met some that actually did and I really wanted to put my hand in their face... but as whole} but here in sichuan I'd say we typically look down upon them :wink:

{note: that is a pun}

Why are your leg hairs so long?

Can you get sated by eating bread?

Do you have rice in your country?

Why can you speak Chinese?

Is Bulgarian English similar to American English?

And the list goes on...:mrgreen:

A taxi driver once asked me whether I knew Chinese characters. I replied: "Yeah, about 2,500 now." -"Hmm. And do you know Pinyin?" - "Yeah." - "Oh my God, that is incredible!!! How did you learn that??"

I LOVE that! :mrgreen:

You talk about reading characters, you tell them you know so-and-so many, and they are "A! Hao lihai!". Then they ask you how you can type Chinese characters, and you say you use pinyin, and they are like "OMG, you can even use pinyin! That's amazing!"

I am Chinese American. Once, while trying to get to know an attractive (but somewhat sheltered) graduate student at Peking University, she asked me, "If you're from America, why don't you have blonde hair?"

blonde hair

I have dark blonde hair, which means that as a little child I had very blonde hair (almost white), which over the years darkened naturally ... up to the point that to the natural eye there's nothing blonde left. Try to explain that in China! :mrgreen:
