atitarev Posted March 28, 2009 at 02:42 PM Report Posted March 28, 2009 at 02:42 PM Quite possible that China has unblocked it because of the attention in the media and because it is popular with many of about 300 mln users in China. It is good that, at least sometimes, China yields to some pressure because it doesn't want to spoil its image too much. My guess, is China firewall won't last more than 5-10 years. Quote
peekay Posted March 28, 2009 at 03:25 PM Report Posted March 28, 2009 at 03:25 PM YouTube (well, Google) uses your IP address to determine where you are, and filter content "appropriately" according to Chinese law. That means even when YouTube isn't blocked, individual videos considered "inappropriate" still can't be seen by most Chinese netizens. The video will work fine when accessed via a foreign proxy, but YouTube will display an error message (or just hang) if the video is accessed from a Chinese IP address. So when the authorities block YouTube in its entirety, rest assured that they are simply culling out "inappropriate" content for our society's benefit. Quote
liuzhou Posted March 29, 2009 at 10:33 AM Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 10:33 AM Seems to be down again, this evening. Quote
liuzhou Posted March 31, 2009 at 02:38 PM Report Posted March 31, 2009 at 02:38 PM Is it only here? We haven't had access toYoutube since Monday evening. Anywhere in Guangxi. Also blocked in Shenzhen. Quote
ABCinChina Posted April 10, 2009 at 03:10 AM Report Posted April 10, 2009 at 03:10 AM Down for a few days in Jiangsu, China as well. Quote

roddy Posted April 12, 2009 at 02:27 PM Report Posted April 12, 2009 at 02:27 PM A VPN (there's an affiliate link for Witopia in that topic, others are available) works perfectly. As far as jumping over the Great Firewall goes, I don't think there's anything a VPN doesn't work for. Quote
imron Posted April 12, 2009 at 04:28 PM Report Posted April 12, 2009 at 04:28 PM Yep, a Witopia VPN costs less than 1 RMB a day over the course of a year, and will get you unrestricted access to everything. If you purchase it through the affiliate link, you are also supporting the forums Quote
Hedge Posted May 1, 2009 at 02:15 AM Report Posted May 1, 2009 at 02:15 AM Im using Witopia, but for some reason I still cant access youtube? The connection gets interrupted. I am sure Witopia is working, because I can access other blocked sites. Also my IP is an american one, according to a trace I did. Anyone experiencing similar problems? Quote
Loriquero Posted May 1, 2009 at 03:55 AM Report Posted May 1, 2009 at 03:55 AM I´m using a vpn trough a friend´s connection in south america, most of the times youtube works just fine, but sometimes it gets stucked and I have to reboot the connection Quote
BrandeX Posted May 3, 2009 at 08:29 AM Report Posted May 3, 2009 at 08:29 AM which of those methods works with youtube? I am using TOR for it, it works just fine. Get the vidalia bundle, and you will be all set. You will need to use a proxy if you want to go to their website though. Quote
roddy Posted May 3, 2009 at 08:32 AM Report Posted May 3, 2009 at 08:32 AM Drop a line to Witopia and see what they say. I don't really use Youtube, but when I have it's been fine. Quote
Don_Horhe Posted May 10, 2009 at 11:57 AM Report Posted May 10, 2009 at 11:57 AM I also installed the Vidalia bundle the other day, and, while I could open all blocked sites, youtube wouldn't play the videos, saying that I either have JavaScript disabled or simply don't have the latest Flash player. Since I none are true, I'm assuming one of the components in the Vidalia bundle has in some way blocked JavaScript. Thing is, I can't find any option for blocking/unblocking. Does anybody have any ideas? BTW, I use the latest version of Firefox. Quote
BrandeX Posted May 12, 2009 at 02:00 PM Report Posted May 12, 2009 at 02:00 PM You have to go into options for torbutton in Firefox, and I think it is on the second tab, uncheck the first box on top that says something about disable all scripts. Quote
Raoul Posted May 24, 2009 at 01:19 PM Report Posted May 24, 2009 at 01:19 PM Trying to pull together some things for my son's birthday party. However, it appears that anything related to Ben 10 has been blocked... Perhaps one of the DNAliens on a recent episode looked a bit Chinese and Ben 10, Gwen and Kevin Eleven gave him a whipping! 哎呀! Prodigal Son Posted May 24, 2009 at 05:46 PM Report Posted May 24, 2009 at 05:46 PM is witopia blocked in china? I've been using hotspot shield recently. it's pretty annoying, there are constant pop up ads. but it is free. Quote
liuzhou Posted June 19, 2009 at 07:16 AM Report Posted June 19, 2009 at 07:16 AM YouTube appears to have blocked itself. If you try to access the site via a proxy, it asks for a "Captcha" verification code. If you supply the code, it can't send it because it needs a verification code before you can send a verification code. Then it spends eternity going round in circles. You can't even report the problem because, guess what; you need a verification code first! Quote
Prodigal Son Posted June 19, 2009 at 09:35 AM Report Posted June 19, 2009 at 09:35 AM still working as usual for me? Quote
