zozzen Posted July 7, 2009 at 03:58 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 03:58 PM 1. In this directory : C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc 2. Open a file named "hosts" with your notepad. 3. Copy and paste the following. # Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1:8080 localhost 203.208.35.100 www.youtube.com 203.208.35.101 gdata.youtube.com 203.208.35.101 youtube.com I've tested it and it really works. Nathan Posted July 7, 2009 at 04:26 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 04:26 PM I've heard of using the host file to access certain websites. However, when I open the host file with notepad and edit it, I can only save the file itself as a text file (.txt) This does not replace the original host file therefore becoming useless. Is there a way to replace the host file with the updated one? Quote
zozzen Posted July 7, 2009 at 05:05 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 05:05 PM simply go to the file, press F2, and remove the .txt extension. By default, Windows hides the .txt extension. If this happens to you, open File Explorer-- > Tools ---> Option ---> Click the tab "View" ---> uncheck the box "Hide known extension names". Quote
Nathan Posted July 7, 2009 at 06:17 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 06:17 PM (edited) Awesome. Now please, if you can, do you know how do get Facebook unblocked? I suspect the government has blocked it. But it's really important I use it. Edited July 7, 2009 at 07:28 PM by Nathan Quote
zozzen Posted July 7, 2009 at 07:59 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 07:59 PM (edited) Here you go. - Download this file: http://ifile.it/2ny0v96 - unzip and execute the file. - Open your IE Yeah, you got it. Interestingly, sometimes it may be faster (sometimes slower at the peak internet hours in China ) P.S. Please don't mention the name in an open forum because it may lead to blackout. gougou Posted July 11, 2009 at 03:35 AM Report Posted July 11, 2009 at 03:35 AM They blocked a couple of servers yesterday or the day before, so that hosts thing should have stopped working for you (because of missing stylesheets and the like). Here's what you'll have to add: 203.208.39.99 upload.youtube.com203.208.39.104 insight.youtube.com 203.208.39.160 help.youtube.com 203.208.39.104 s.ytimg.com 203.208.39.99 i1.ytimg.com 203.208.39.160 i2.ytimg.com 203.208.39.99 i3.ytimg.com 203.208.39.104 i4.ytimg.com Works like a charm, again. Prodigal Son Posted July 11, 2009 at 06:53 AM Report Posted July 11, 2009 at 06:53 AM works great, thank you!! I've been using the Freedur free trial for a few days and it is fantastic. Although today it said due to maintenance the trial isn't working, I think I'll sign up when the 30 day trial passes. Quote
Loriquero Posted July 11, 2009 at 05:31 PM Report Posted July 11, 2009 at 05:31 PM that "hosts" thing is awesome... 非常感谢。 Quote
gougou Posted January 6, 2010 at 01:16 AM Report Posted January 6, 2010 at 01:16 AM I've seen several people on Douban say that Youtube was accessible for them again; can anyone confirm? Still doesn't work for me here (at work); forgot to check at home yesterday. Quote
liuzhou Posted January 6, 2010 at 01:59 AM Report Posted January 6, 2010 at 01:59 AM I've seen several people on Douban say that Youtube was accessible for them again; can anyone confirm? Were they perhaps referring to this? China's Internet censorship system, known to most of its opponents as the Great FireWall or GFW suffered an outage last night.According to comments on this website and chatter on Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Danwei.org and Twitter itself were all accessible in China from about midnight last night until about 3:30 am. Danwei, January 4th YouTube certainly not available here now. Quote
gougou Posted January 6, 2010 at 03:35 AM Report Posted January 6, 2010 at 03:35 AM Yeah, I guess most comments were from about that time. Quote
kdavid Posted March 6, 2011 at 01:14 PM Report Posted March 6, 2011 at 01:14 PM WTF, mate? Perhaps a temporary kink in the GFW? Quote
