In Japanese the above is toban and I wanted to add jan but didn't find the character.

It is Chinese chili paste.

Is that the name in Chinese too - toubanjan

Does it have a better name than chinese chili paste in English.

If you feel like passing any recipes my way too... feel free.

Dou ban jiang is one of the fundamental flavors in Sichuan cooking and is made from broad beans (can dou...and more commonly known as fava beans, especially if you're a SILENCE OF THE LAMBS fan), chilies, and who knows what else anyone's no-doubt secret recipe might include. Pixian, in Sichuan, is famous for its broad beans, so you'll often find Pixian doubanjiang.
