imron Posted October 28, 2007 at 03:15 AM Report Share Posted October 28, 2007 at 03:15 AM (edited) After playing with it for a few minutes, Fun Input Toy now gets my seal of approval, and will almost certainly become my default Chinese input method (normally I use QIM). Not only does the pinyin prediciton seem a little bit better than QIM, but the wubi mode allows you to type in either wubi or pinyin at the same time! Very nice. Plus it's free. Edited November 15, 2008 at 02:14 AM by imron added links to the input methods.

Unfortunately I agree with you Because I had paid the 20 us for QIM about a month ago.... It would be nice if Fun Input Toy had more options under the preferences (like, I enjoyed the option of shift or caps for the english/chinese in QIM) and unfortunately it also does not have a lot of the dictionaries that QIM have so it doesn't recognize many chengyu's. I typed 对牛谈情 and this is what I got.
roddy Posted October 29, 2007 at 12:36 AM Report Share Posted October 29, 2007 at 12:36 AM Try checking your pinyin, typing 对牛弹琴 and see what you get.

However I only paid 69RMB, after all, the website clearly states the 69RMB is for people living in mainland China - which is me (like, I enjoyed the option of shift or caps for the english/chinese in QIM)FIT has this too. If I recall correctly, it's on by default. Just single press shift and it will switch between chinese/english.
imron Posted October 29, 2007 at 03:48 AM Author Report Share Posted October 29, 2007 at 03:48 AM Although don't give up on QIM just yet. I've just had a look at their homepage, and it seems they've recently released a new version with intelligent sentence generation. I'll have to look into that when I get home. However I only paid 69RMB, after all, the website clearly states the 69RMB is for people living in mainland China - which is me I was having problems with paypal and so bit the bullet and did the extra FIT has this too. If I recall correctly, it's on by default. Just single press shift and it will switch between chinese/english. My point being I want to use the caps lock not the shift...I accidentally bump shift too much Although don't give up on QIM just yet. I've just had a look at their homepage, and it seems they've recently released a new version with intelligent sentence generation. I'll have to look into that when I get home. I was wondering when they would come out with a new version- it had been awhile...downloading now...will report back!
muyongshi Posted October 29, 2007 at 06:01 AM Report Share Posted October 29, 2007 at 06:01 AM Trying out the new version of QIM right now.... 先把一个很长的句子写出来。看起来全部都没有问题。再来一句话看看她是不是那么聪明... Well as you can see the only mistake was the 她 but there is no way that that one can be guessed except on frequency....not too bad... but for those still wanting wubi QIM doesn't support it. Other than that it's great. They have removed the dictionaries under preferences and just made them naturally integrated so you can't turn specific ones off and on. imron Posted October 29, 2007 at 02:23 PM Author Report Share Posted October 29, 2007 at 02:23 PM Just starting downloading this now. The download is called: QIM_1_4_0_SogouDict.dmg.zip No prizes for guessing where the dictionary came from
muyongshi Posted October 30, 2007 at 01:21 AM Report Share Posted October 30, 2007 at 01:21 AM (edited) Since about half of this thread is about QIM and FIT maybe it should be split....(just a thought especially since I'm continuing on that line of thought) One thing I still wish QIM would have added was the recommendation feature... you know where you type in once character and then it comes up with a list of possibilities that match...I liked that on the mac built in input for the sake of when I forget the second-half of a word (havn't really needed it for awhile now). Imron- have you downloaded the QIT thing yet? If so what is your thoughts on that...I have another hour or so before it's done downloading.... jonathan_s Posted November 6, 2007 at 07:43 PM Report Share Posted November 6, 2007 at 07:43 PM Fun input toy works really great. I'm a dvorak user. (read as: non-querty user) and the ATABC input method that's build in mac os x always uses the querty layout. (Actually, in Tiger it also worked well with other layouts, but since I haven't found any documentation mentioning this it think it was a useful bug.) Anyway, in Leopard, ATABC only supports one single keyboard layout: querty. FIT keeps the original layout. QIM can do this also, but isn't free. So, these are great utilities for azerty, qwertz, dvorak and other keyboard users.
imron Posted November 17, 2007 at 05:23 AM Author Report Share Posted November 17, 2007 at 05:23 AM Imron- have you downloaded the QIT thing yet? If so what is your thoughts on thatWell I finally got around to finishing downloading and installing this today, and it seems to work great. However now that I've found a decent 五笔 input method for the Mac, I'll probably go back to using that. After a several month hiatus using mostly pinyin since switching to a Mac, I found myself getting a little rusty.
muyongshi Posted November 17, 2007 at 05:35 AM Report Share Posted November 17, 2007 at 05:35 AM Well in terms of the pinyin input after using them both I think I actually like QIM a lot better. Having all of the preferences to choose from helps. If I ever get around to learning 五笔 I'll switch to FIT but the learning curve on 五笔 doesn't appeal to me at all... imron Posted November 17, 2007 at 05:49 AM Author Report Share Posted November 17, 2007 at 05:49 AM Yes, in terms of pinyin, there is now no comparison between FIT and QIM. The automatic sentence construction brings it up to par with pinyin input methods available under windows. 五笔 does have a steep learning curve, but the flip side is that using a computer to type actually helps instead of hinders your ability to recall characters. A bigger problem is the fact that there don't seem to be any wubi typing tutors for the mac, which would make the learning curve even steeper! muyongshi Posted November 17, 2007 at 08:11 AM Report Share Posted November 17, 2007 at 08:11 AM Do you think that QIM would ever add 五笔 support? Imagine it can't be too hard to add it...
imron Posted November 17, 2007 at 09:21 AM Author Report Share Posted November 17, 2007 at 09:21 AM I dunno. As for being hard to add, I guess everything's relative. It would certainly be easier than the effort required to add predictive pinyin, but I'm not sure if they'd be interested in adding support for it.
