Traditional Pinyin Input in OX 10.5

Well I think many Mac OS users who work with traditional characters have been waiting for this a long time. According to Apple and chatter from the Yale Chinese Mac mailing list, it seems that regular pinyin input has been added for Traditional Chinese. No more Hanin IME!!!

I know it just came out last week, but has anyone tried it? How is it? Does it work as well as the simplified IME? I'm keeping my eye on QIM and FIY IMEs as well, but I'm curious about the pinyin input Apple added.

Then they should just switch to using either FIT or QIM (which both support typing traditional characters using pinyin). If it's anything like the default pinyin IME for simplified chinese you're better off switching anyway. That's what most Mac OSX users I know of do if they need to work with simplified characters.

Sometimes they don't always have the choice, such as when using public terminals or work computers. In my office I am not freely allowed to install software on the machine, and the network admins don't like to add third-party apps unless they have to.

That's a fair enough point, however given how unworkable the default IMEs are, I think a valid case could be made that better IMEs were essential

:) I agree with you! I just can't seem to make the case to the admins because I work in Japan and really there is no reason for me to be typing Chinese at work as we have no customers in China. I guess he is onto me and my goal of using it for writing personal e-mails. (sh)

You could always try and argue that you really want it for typing in Kanji it's just that you find it easier to type them using Chinese. I have a couple of Japanese friends who do the opposite of this when they write in "Chinese" to me.

Oh well, at least you're lucky enough to work in a place that uses Macs
