Phoenix TV accents

Does anyone else find it a bit difficult to understand some of the broadcasters, reporters, and hosts on Phoenix TV? Are they HKers? Their Mandarin isn't what I'm used to (I'm trying to say this in the nicest possible way ). Is it considered standard by mainlanders?

Phoenix as I recall is a Taiwanese channel? So Taiwan-hua, or Taiwan accent putonghua maybe?

Phoenix is out of Hong Kong. Never watched it much, but at a guess that would be what the accent is.

aha, I see. Well someday I will have to get a place with a television I guess! lol Only watching TV occasionally now online, when my gf wants to.

Yeah. It’s a little different form standard mandarin Chinese (such as CCTV accent).

most of them must be HKers.

But I know CHEN LU YU 陈鲁豫 speaks standard mandarin Chinese, her native place is Beijing, or other northern china city. She can not speak Cantonese.

it's very different from hong kong accent, and even 梁文道's accent is somewhat between taiwanese and standard putonghua rather than "common" hong kong accent.

While many hongkongese see Phoenix TV as a mainland china TV station, it seems to me that many mainlanders refer it as a "hong kong tv station". In fact, it is registered in Hong Kong but founded by 劉長樂 and most employees are not hongkongers. If you travel a lot to expose to different accents in the mainland china, that's the accent you can hear in Phoenix TV. Not as "standard" as CCTV, but more "real" than it.

陈鲁豫,窦文涛,许戈辉,陈晓楠,何亮亮 are from mainland China.

吴小莉,谢亚芳,董嘉耀,阮次山,石齐平 are from Taiwan.

Yes,they have different accents but they don't bother me since I'm a Chinese. If you practice your hearing well enough, it won't be a problem. Phonix is a very good TV station for people who like to learn the 2 major accents of chinese.

On CCTV or big mainland stations, they dub every show that has non standard accents (beijinghua excepted). The Putonghua promoting agency snobs can't stand the slightest non standard accent. Phoenix TV is a mix of different accents, all pretty standard in grammar and vocabulary and should not be hard to understand.

Not strictly true, at least not anymore. 武林外传 is a good example of a recent show with a broad variety of accents that was shown regularly on CCTV. 金姻 is another, although I'm not sure what channel it was on (it would have been a big one though). The latter however did almost seem to make a point that after a character spoke in a dialect (e.g. Sichuanese) some other character would chip in saying how they should speak standard Putonghua instead

I hope they would change that, because I never get to hear the actors and actresses' real voice. They dub even when they think the actor/actress' voice doesn't sound good enough! There are vietnamese and other asian people on youtube that are adamant about watching the "original" Chinese versions. I wonder if they realized they never got anything original, every mainland drama was dubbed Mandarin over Mandarin...
