zozzen Posted November 21, 2007 at 08:47 PM Report Share Posted November 21, 2007 at 08:47 PM Thanks for Portable Firefox, I take it in my USB flashcard adapter to travel along with me. That helps me a lot when I travel in China. Here's the addons I have. How about you? 1. TORbutton You can access any website in China without fearing the Great firewall of China. That speed is very slow, but at least you can get the information undesirable to the gov't. 2. New Tong wen tang Switching simplified and traditional Chinese with one click. What's great is that you can switch the coding in clipboard or message box too. 3. Dict.cn This bilingual dictionary is akin to a clean and simplified Kingsoft dictionary. With a click, you can also check the pinyin. I particular like the way to enable / disable the dictionary searching function. download link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

gato Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:31 PM Report Share Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:31 PM You need - ScrapBook, a kind of web clipbook - Copy Plain Text - and Chinese Pera-kun, of course
atitarev Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:38 PM Report Share Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:38 PM Some language related plug-ins: 1) ChinesePera-kun (Chinese pop-up dictionary) - Displays popups of the pinyin pronunciation and the English definition when you hover over Chinese text on a website. 2) Rikaichan - the same for Japanese (need to install dictionaries separately) 3) Moji - detailed kanji/hanzi and word info, install dictionaries separately (Moji-EN, Moji-Kanji-En), focused on Japanese but valuable for Chinese learners as well 4) Foxlingo - online translators - many languages, a few engines - both web sites and pasted texts. 5) XHTML Ruby Support - Ruby (furigana) tags - supported in MS IE by default, need this in Firefox 6) Gb2big - simplified/traditional convert 7) gTranslate - similar to FoxLingo - works for selected text (FoxLingo is better, IMHO) also recommend FireFTP - by default Firefox doesn't work with FTP protocols well. Greasemonkey is needed for some JavaScripts. Thanks, Gato, Copy plain text is very useful.
imron Posted November 22, 2007 at 02:02 AM Report Share Posted November 22, 2007 at 02:02 AM 1) Mouse Gestures (I used to be an Opera fan, and old habits die hard) 2) Flashblock (because 95% of all flash is annoying) 3) SwitchProxy (fast switching of proxy settings between normal/tunnelled) 4) Chinese Pera-kun (useful for looking up obscure words). zozzen Posted November 22, 2007 at 02:28 AM Author Report Share Posted November 22, 2007 at 02:28 AM I like all suggestions here, please keep it up so that we won't miss the best. other tools that i find it useful during my travel in China: gspace --- save your travel photos in gmail's 4GB space Fox Clocks -- Show world time in a status bar Stock Ticker -- As far as i've tired,, that's the only ticker that offers hong kong and china's stock quotes. Unfortunately it doesn't fully work in my portable firefox. Not sure if that works in a desktop firefox. FEBE -- Backup everything in firefox. My Firefox crashed several time, and happened once during my travel. It was a mess that all my bookmarks lost and i had to download every extension again. I wish i had FEBE earlier. Alexa Sparky -- a website tracking tool that shows the ranking, trend for visitors, and related links when you visit any website. Hmmm, Chinese-forums.com ranks 134,802 and a small drop in the number of visitors recently. stumbleupon -- automatically take you to a website in your favorite topics. Their suggestions are usually very good. Google Toolbar -- Spell check, pop-up block, search word highlight.... And Imron, does switchproxy help access blocked websites in China? I'm currently not there, so i can't test it. FoxyProxy also seems to be a powerful tool, but i'm also not sure if that can be used in china. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464
imron Posted November 22, 2007 at 03:57 AM Report Share Posted November 22, 2007 at 03:57 AM SwitchProxy is only useful for setting up multiple different proxy configurations and then telling firefox which one to use. By itself, it doesn't help you get around the firewall, it just makes it less hassle to switch between proxied access and normal access. Regarding gspace, why not just use Google's Picasa Web Albums? zozzen Posted November 22, 2007 at 10:20 AM Author Report Share Posted November 22, 2007 at 10:20 AM Ah, gspace also supports mp3, mov and avi. It's actually a virtual harddisk.
lokki Posted November 22, 2007 at 03:55 PM Report Share Posted November 22, 2007 at 03:55 PM As for addons I have Hanzibar, with pop-up dictionary functions for both Chinese and Japanese. I also use the Ctrl-+ and Ctrl-- keystrokes a lot, to increase/reduce the size of hanzi in firefox and I have a question on that. QUESTION: Apparently, once I have enlarged the hanzi with Ctrl-+ (Control-plus) it is no longer possible to reduce them back with Ctrl-- (Control-minus) all the way to the original small size. I am stuck with a larger hanzi font size for that page. Even restarting firefox and reloading the page does not seem to help. It is stuck like that forever. Is anybody else having this problem ? Can anyone tell me how to reset this ?
OracleBone Posted November 22, 2007 at 07:32 PM Report Share Posted November 22, 2007 at 07:32 PM why not use Maxthon? I think it is better than firefox...
Luobot Posted November 23, 2007 at 07:37 AM Report Share Posted November 23, 2007 at 07:37 AM I also use the Ctrl-+ and Ctrl-- keystrokes a lot One of the most useful Firefox extensions that I have is Accessibar. • Increase and decrease Font size. • Increase and decrease line spacing. • Change web page fonts and background colors. Lots of other features. Also, you can assign its functions to toolbar buttons or shortcut keys.
ABCinChina Posted December 8, 2007 at 12:36 AM Report Share Posted December 8, 2007 at 12:36 AM You gotta love Firefox for the add-ins. Here's my list. Adblock Plus - Blocks all those unwanted ads. ChinesePera-kun - Thanks to users from this forum. Download Statusbar - Makes multiple downloads look much more tidy. IE Tab - Let's you use IE within Firefox! MacfoxIIgraphite - OSX Theme ported to PC.
