Translation of Metal Star Pin

Hi!

I was in San Fransisco this weekend visiting my dad and we went to China Town. While I was there, I bought a pin with what I assume are Chinese characters on it. I think it may have something to do with Communism because it was next to pins with Mao's face on them.

Anyways, we meant to ask the guy selling the pins what it meant, but then completely forgot. I attached a picture of it and was wondering if someone could help me out. Let me know if you need a better pic, I can get one easily enough.

It simply means "For excellent conduct or service - first class"

一等功臣 means first class statesmen, generals, etc who have made great contributions to the country.

功 means merits for the contributions made to the country.
