DavidM Posted November 28, 2007 at 03:08 PM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 03:08 PM I'm desperately looking for a Chinese Version of Windows XP using Traditional Characters. The ones availaible at amazon.cn all use simplified ones. So, does anyone here know about an online store which sells this stuff and also offers shipping to Austria, Europe? Thanks in advance. adrianlondon Posted November 28, 2007 at 03:42 PM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 03:42 PM Best bet it to get a copy from Taiwan. I assume all you need is the CD (a copy will do) as you can then use the licence key from a legit copy bought in Austria. Would that work? Quote
adrianlondon Posted November 28, 2007 at 03:46 PM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 03:46 PM Horribly expensive ... (plus 45 US for postage to Austria) http://www.twinbridge.com/detail.aspx?ID=108# Quote
DavidM Posted November 28, 2007 at 04:15 PM Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 04:15 PM That's indeed a complete ripoff. Furthermore, I'm currently running Windows Vista on my notebook, which means that I don't possess a licence key for Windows XP. Quote
self-taught-mba Posted November 28, 2007 at 05:53 PM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 05:53 PM Immediately had the same reaction when I saw dot cn. try anything dot tw or hk or sg for that matter. Quote
choisum Posted November 28, 2007 at 10:45 PM Report Posted November 28, 2007 at 10:45 PM Why do you need Traditional Chinese Windows XP? A lot of people use English XP but have it switched into Chinese mode. The desktop menus are in English but Chinese programs run fine with Chinese menus etc... Quote
imron Posted November 29, 2007 at 02:04 PM Report Posted November 29, 2007 at 02:04 PM The other thing to do, would be to use the Windows MUI (Multilingual User Interface), which I believe comes default with Vista Ultimate, however versions can also be found for other versions of Vista and also XP. shibole Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:46 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:46 AM Anyone know if a traditional chinese interface language pack of some sort for english windows xp? I know a guy from Taiwan who unfortunately doesn't speak any English, and his laptop looks like it needs an OS reinstall. The laptop came with English XP but at some point it seems like he got someone to install a traditional chinese version of XP on it, which he doesn't have the install CD ROM for. Quote
imron Posted November 30, 2007 at 05:10 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 05:10 AM That's the Windows MUI. Under XP, it will install on any English Windows XP Professional, and allows you to configure the user interface language on a per-user basis. Quote
choisum Posted November 30, 2007 at 09:49 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 09:49 AM > That's the Windows MUI. Under XP, it will install on any > English Windows XP Professional Did you download the XP MUI from the Microsoft website? Last I checked, it was OEM only and wasn't available for download to the general public -- at least not the MUI pack which changes the desktop -- though I see MUI Packs for IE and Media Player. Quote
imron Posted November 30, 2007 at 10:55 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 10:55 AM I don't know if it's available for download from the Microsoft website, I imagine you should be able to purchase it separately though. Quote
adrianlondon Posted November 30, 2007 at 11:03 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 11:03 AM You can't download it. You can't buy it as an add-on. It installs over the English version of Windows XP Professional. To get it you'll need to contact Microsoft ... "The Windows XP/2000 MUI is sold only through Volume Licensing programs such as the Microsoft Open License Program (MOLP / Open), Select, and Enterprise agreement (or with a new computer as an OEM version at customer request). It is not available through retail channels." Quote
imron Posted November 30, 2007 at 11:16 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 11:16 AM Well, that's a sure recipe for piracy if you have some useful software but refuse to sell it to people who want to buy it. Quote
shibole Posted November 30, 2007 at 09:50 PM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 09:50 PM Maybe I'll contact Dell and see if there's any way to get it from them somehow, even though this isn't a new computer. Of course knowing them they'll connect me to someone in an Indian call center who will want to charge me $30, after which they'll say "ok, let me check..... the answer is no. have a nice day." I know some IT people with access to VLP contract stuff. Perhaps I'll ask them if they can "demonstrate" it for me sometime. Quote
choisum Posted December 1, 2007 at 10:57 PM Report Posted December 1, 2007 at 10:57 PM It believe it has been available (in the past) to Microsoft developers who subscribe to MSDN. Though this subscription is way more expensive than going out and buying an extra retail copy of Chinese Windows. And, it may no longer be available on the subscription since Vista got released. ep1200 Posted December 4, 2007 at 10:04 AM Report Posted December 4, 2007 at 10:04 AM MUI pack for XP is still available on MSDN. For chinese (both traditoinal and simplified) You need CD1. Quote
Battosai Posted December 6, 2007 at 12:40 PM Report Posted December 6, 2007 at 12:40 PM You can buy MUI CDs in China I remember buying one a few years ago so I can run boxes with both English and Chinese interfaces. Now that I've switched to Linux I don't need this hassle anymore... Quote
ipsi() Posted December 6, 2007 at 06:58 PM Report Posted December 6, 2007 at 06:58 PM I would love to be able to easily switch between English and Chinese, mostly for when I'm fixing my girlfriend's laptop. It's just so much easier if it's in English... Otherwise might as well leave it as Chinese for her. Quote

ipsi() Posted December 7, 2007 at 02:42 AM Report Posted December 7, 2007 at 02:42 AM But that would defeat the point... If I bought her a Mac, I wouldn't need to fix it for her. Not that that's a bad thing... But that would require a job... Quote
