fireball9261 Posted November 29, 2007 at 10:47 PM Report Posted November 29, 2007 at 10:47 PM I like both bao and zhou, so I pick both. I know my brother likes to have noodles for breakfast, but I can't think of noodles before 12:00 noon. I rather have western breakfast than to have noodles. Quote
gougou Posted November 29, 2007 at 11:50 PM Report Posted November 29, 2007 at 11:50 PM Where is the 饼 option? For me, every day (except weekends, which don't start until some time after lunch) starts with two 夹蛋饼 and a 豆浆。 Quote
geraldc Posted November 30, 2007 at 12:11 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 12:11 AM No 點心option? Quote
fireball9261 Posted November 30, 2007 at 12:30 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 12:30 AM Yes, I also have green onion pancakes and soybean milk for breakfast sometimes as well as either Shanghainese or Cantonese dim sums. Quote
yonglin Posted November 30, 2007 at 01:35 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 01:35 AM mmmm... i like 煎饼~~~ greasy and tasty. Quote
cdn_in_bj Posted November 30, 2007 at 02:34 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 02:34 AM Here's another write-in for 饼. Specifically, 鸡蛋饼. Quote
simonlaing Posted November 30, 2007 at 02:34 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 02:34 AM You must be in the north, in nanjing there are lots of choices for breakfast including those. I like xiao mai 小麦, omelette 鸡蛋并, Ma tuan are good too, let's not forget dou jiang 豆浆 soy milk. xian bing, salty flake toast 馅饼。 and the omelette with fried bread in the middle. Just for starters. Delicious. have fun, SimoN:) Quote
elina Posted November 30, 2007 at 02:58 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 02:58 AM Apart from 豆浆, there's 豆腐脑 which is also delicious I think. Another: 菜团子. Quote
self-taught-mba Posted November 30, 2007 at 03:30 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 03:30 AM another write in for jian1bing3 - used to eat it everday until I got tired of it. recently though: ji1dan4guan1bing3 now that does the trick! Does anyone else eat this? By the way does anyone actually know the character for that "guan1"? (I know what you're thinking I know write the characters anyway - I know that's just for the benefit of people that don't recognize them -which often includes me! When it comes to food names) I suppose I could walk out of my office and ask somebody but I won't. I will assume that it is guan1cai de guan1 (as in coffin). That would seem to make sense anyway. Sometimes I just like guessing when the confirmation will come later it will really reinforce it. Quote
gougou Posted November 30, 2007 at 03:38 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 03:38 AM I think it's 鸡蛋灌饼. It certainly would not be that popular if it was named after coffins, or any other word related to death. I like to eat that one too, but sadly, nobody's selling them on my way to work - and as good as they are, I can't be bothered to get up earlier to make a detour! For 煎饼, I'm the same as you - used to eat them religiously for a month or so, then got fed up and haven't had the desire to eat one ever since. Quote
heifeng Posted November 30, 2007 at 03:53 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 03:53 AM mybreakfast comes out of a 'Chinese' Nestle coffee box:wink: [edit] but this this is my preferred option yummm Quote
self-taught-mba Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:23 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:23 AM Our assistant who buys it for me insists that it is first tone - but she has been known to make tone mistakes (I've already "won" a lot of money betting her). Since I picked it up through listening, I can only guess. I guess guan4gai4 de guan4 would make sense. I still think coffin might make sense too, but now I see your point about the relation to death thing. What they do here is they make a small hole in the pancake thing, put the egg in it so it is kind of buried and sealed if you will. So I don't know. Quote
gougou Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:53 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:53 AM Google has 47,000 against 25, so I guess we can safely rule out the coffin variant Quote
liuzhou Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:59 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 04:59 AM I guess we can safely rule out the coffin variant You're probably right, but coffins aren't always negative! Liuzhou Coffins Quote
roddy Posted November 30, 2007 at 05:44 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 05:44 AM If I may offer photographic evidence. Don't really eat breakfast these days. I miss it. Quote
self-taught-mba Posted November 30, 2007 at 09:39 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 09:39 AM The old Google rule - of course (remember the MW for apple thread?). I like the speculation followed by discovery method though. So corpses (corpsi?) for me in the morning. (not gonna Google it - ha!) So does anybody love the egg pancake coffins as much as I do? Quote
gougou Posted November 30, 2007 at 10:03 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 10:03 AM So does anybody love the egg pancake coffins as much as I do?Yeah, I do actually! Of all the 饼 I've had so far, they're my favorite by far. But as I said, normally don't have them for breakfast. Have them for dinner once in a while though (depending on which bus I take, I get off at a different stop in the evening than I get on in the morning; then the vendor is on my way ) Quote
BrandeX Posted November 30, 2007 at 10:59 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 10:59 AM Which choice is McDonald's or bread/cake from the local bakery? Quote
liuzhou Posted November 30, 2007 at 11:16 AM Report Posted November 30, 2007 at 11:16 AM I usually have bacon and eggs. With toast. Quote
