muppetwonder Posted December 5, 2007 at 06:03 PM Report Posted December 5, 2007 at 06:03 PM Hi all, I'm an advanced learner of Chinese and looking for a tool that I think would really help me in my studies. The tool would allow me to browse to my favourite Chinese websites that have Chinese content, such as newspapers or discussion forums. It would then allow me to place the mouse cursor over Chinese words I am not familiar with, and display a popup window with the definition for that word, in Chinese. The functionality would be similar to this software called, "KeyTip" (http://www.cjkware.com/prod_desc.htm#KEYTIPC), or the hover tool when you go to Chinese-Tools.com's song picks where hovering over the Chinese lyrics would pop up the definition (http://www.chinese-tools.com/songs/song/177/fannaoge.html). But the difference is that I'm looking for a Chinese-Chinese dictionary. This is because I find that most of the time, English definitions of Chinese words are not nuanced enough and my grasp of the meaning is not very complete. This is especially true of more advanced vocabulary, like those used in academic journals or technical writing. Does anyone know of such a tool? Thanks in advance. Quote
shibole Posted December 5, 2007 at 07:58 PM Report Posted December 5, 2007 at 07:58 PM I think there are a number of chinese-chinese dictionaries available for Stardict. Not sure how legal they all are though. Quote
zozzen Posted December 6, 2007 at 02:04 AM Report Posted December 6, 2007 at 02:04 AM the best online Han-Han dictionary is http://140.111.34.46/dict/, hosted and complied by the ministry of education in taiwan. The site is currently under maintenance. Give it a try next week. Quote
in_lab Posted December 6, 2007 at 05:24 AM Report Posted December 6, 2007 at 05:24 AM Dr. Eye has a mouse-over Chinese-Chinese dictionary. The dictionary isn't very impressive though. Maybe you could check Dr. Eye's web site to see how many words it has. Quote
greenmoon55 Posted December 6, 2007 at 12:07 PM Report Posted December 6, 2007 at 12:07 PM I often use http://www.ciyang.com/ as a Chinese-Chinese dictionary, but you have to copy the words in the search form. You can try lingoes, which is free and has an English version, you can download a Chinese-Chinese dictionary from its website.Stardict is another tool like lingoes, but I haven't used it. Quote
muppetwonder Posted December 22, 2007 at 05:56 AM Author Report Posted December 22, 2007 at 05:56 AM I wanted to say thanks to everyone who responded and made suggestions. Unfortunately, I didn't find any to fit exactly what I was looking for. Then, a couple days ago, I stumbled upon Chinesepera-kun (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3349) This is exactly what I'm looking for EXCEPT, I'd like the definitions to be in Chinese. I'm thinking that if such a tool doesn't already exist, perhaps we can extend Chinesepera-kun to be a Chinese-Chinese dictionary. Do you know of any open source/public domain Chinese-Chinese dictionaries? Quote
