The simplest Chinese text format on a Pocket PC

Hi,

I was wondering if someone had the experience when files copied to Windows Mobile device just wouldn't open because of the size or it took a long time. Also HTML files may not open with a correct encoding.

Saving them as text (txt) would cause to lose the formatting and the Hanzi would not be displayed properly.

Is there a light version of a text editor/viewer for Chinese text (similar to Wordpad, perhaps)?

Have something tweaked MS IE on a PPC to display Hanzi properly (or any CJK character)?

Thanks, I'll try this! :)

Did it work for you?

Another thing I hate is how mobile devices can't open a bit larger files. 100 pages Word document (plain text) would hang Word for a long time if it will open at all.

You may wish to buy Documents to Go, then. The latest version will not, unfortunately, work with Chinese (older versions will though), but I can quite happily open a 60MB, 300 page PDF file without any issue whatsoever on my Treo 680. Admittedly, I think it only loads one page at a time, and reads each page from the SD Card whenever I ask for it, which makes it a bit slow, but it does work. I imagine the same is true for Word Files. I'll try it with some random texts and see if it works.

I assume your device is actually set up to display Chinese correctly? If you can't enter it, or otherwise display Chinese *anywhere* then you probably don't have the right fonts installed...

Ok, a quick test reveals that Documents to Go is fully able to open a 500+ page document without any problems. File size is about 1.9MB. Documents to Go is available for WinMob as well, so yeah. You may wish to have a look at that. It also might be better at displaying Chinese on Windows Mobile than on a Palm OS Device.

Thanks, Ipsi. I didn't know there is a version of Documents to Go for Windows Mobile.

Not sure I want to BUY before I check all free options, though. :)

(I will test Choisum's suggestion).

The device doesn't have any problem with Chinese characters - I have a few dictionaries, IME's and I can work with smaller documents using Word.

I DO have an issue with the MS Internet Explorer browser on my HP iPAQ. The HTML pages saved either as Unicode or Chinese simplified (GB) do not show correctly, even if I changed the default encoding.

I downloaded and installed Vade Mecum (viewer). What do I need to convert documents into Plucker format?

The IE seems to behave better now. But - No word wrap!

I can open a chapter at a time, e.g. 10 pages or so.
