Japanese and Chinese astronomers witnessed this violent event in 1054.” I wonder what interpretation these ancient astronomers gave to the arrival of this “guest star,” as the Chinese called it. (I did a Google search to get a quick answer but couldn't find one, so it may be buried in some ancient Chinese record of the times.) Europe, which was then in the dark ages, either missed the event or suppressed any knowledge of it. A high resolution picture can be seen here.
