jim.sheng Posted December 20, 2007 at 05:40 AM Report Posted December 20, 2007 at 05:40 AM By the way, what's the difference in usage of joking and kidding? Quote
nipponman Posted December 26, 2007 at 07:05 PM Report Posted December 26, 2007 at 07:05 PM ^ In english? There is no appreciable difference b/w the two. "Joking" may be more formal than "kidding" but if so, barely. They can be used in the exact same situations. Now the same isn't true of their uninflected forms; here, "Joke" is preferred over "Kid". Good: "That was just a joke" Bad: "That was just a kid" Good: "Why would you joke with me like that?" Ok/Good: "Why would you kid with me like that?" Good: "That kind of joke isn't appropriate in this situation, you know." Bad "That kind of kid isn't appropriate in this situation, you know" etc. Quote

L-F-J Posted December 30, 2007 at 01:48 AM Report Posted December 30, 2007 at 01:48 AM also often added to the sentence to dismiss it as nothing serious, 只是 can be used, as in: 我只是开玩笑. then you can also add an ending, 而已 or 罢了 as in: 我只是开玩笑而已/罢了. Quote
heifeng Posted December 30, 2007 at 05:27 AM Report Posted December 30, 2007 at 05:27 AM well if you are kidding around with them, and they say really? or something like that, then you can say something like 哈哈逗你玩儿! from 马三立老先生有个著名的段子叫“逗你玩儿”,意思是做事不和你当真,让你乐呵乐呵就完了 Quote

imron Posted December 31, 2007 at 07:39 AM Report Posted December 31, 2007 at 07:39 AM No, there are a couple around, but once they've been studying long enough, they usually come to the realisation that at the very least, learning to read Chinese is useful - and you've just demonstrated perfectly well why this is the case Believe it or not, it actually makes learning Chinese easier too (despite the fact that initially it seems like a lot of hard work).
