SeekerOfPeace Posted December 23, 2007 at 03:32 AM Report Posted December 23, 2007 at 03:32 AM 菜恩斯特王国的余躲在这个村子里是绝对错不了的 What is the function of the 的 at the end of this sentence? Thank you. Quote
LaoZhang Posted December 23, 2007 at 04:56 AM Report Posted December 23, 2007 at 04:56 AM 是绝对错不了的 = is unquestionable, assuredly. The _____+ 的 turns the _____ part into an adj/adv. In this case, the characteristic is "绝对错不了" which essentially means "absolutely/without mistake." A simpler example, 我是爱你的 You can translate this as "I do love you" or "I'm the one that loves you" or "I am one who loves you." Hope that helps, sorry I don't know more grammar words. Quote
muyongshi Posted December 23, 2007 at 05:29 AM Report Posted December 23, 2007 at 05:29 AM I'm not the greatest at grammar terms either but when you say 是 many time you need to add a 的 to the end. Compare: 我是美国人 我是美国的 The 的 implies that you have "left" something out. LIke in the above example you can say 我爱你 but if you say 我是爱你 you must add the 的 for two reasons: one is to imply emphasis (ie its ME who loves you not him) and also the 是 changes the structure of the sentence and so technically the sentence should be 我是爱你的人 (i am the one who loves you) but the 人 can be left out (implied). Many time it is used in emphasis of adjectives just like your original post. You could say 菜恩斯特王国的余躲在这个村子里绝对错不了 but they added the 是。。。的 combo to place an emphasis on it. Quote
889 Posted December 23, 2007 at 05:53 AM Report Posted December 23, 2007 at 05:53 AM I'm no grammarian either, so I won't dare try to explain this. But I will identify it for you as the "是 -- 的 shi-de construction" and any good grammar book should be able to give you an incomprehensible explanation of it. Quote
skylee Posted December 23, 2007 at 12:34 PM Report Posted December 23, 2007 at 12:34 PM Also take a look at this thread -> All "Simple," yet confusing grammar rules #2 是。。。的 And what is "菜恩斯特王国的余"? Something is missing here. Quote
iceuup Posted December 25, 2007 at 01:31 PM Report Posted December 25, 2007 at 01:31 PM i think there si something wrong with"余" replace with "国王" is suitable Quote
Rhubarb Posted January 1, 2008 at 12:12 PM Report Posted January 1, 2008 at 12:12 PM I like grammatical questions What is the function of the 的 at the end of this sentence? it has the same function as the particle 'of' which can be used to make a compound adjective attribute out of a noun or just give the noun a function of adjective attribute : this notion is of importance to you = this notion is important to you Quote
ning dony Posted January 2, 2008 at 10:29 AM Report Posted January 2, 2008 at 10:29 AM I agree with LaoZhang. Quote
Guoke Posted January 2, 2008 at 11:25 AM Report Posted January 2, 2008 at 11:25 AM In Chinese, ……的 is used to indicate an adjectival phrase. A Chinese adjectival phrase (shown in brackets/parentheses) is placed before a noun: (在天空飞的)小鸟 = the bird (flying in the sky) In English, an adjectival phrase is placed after a noun. More examples: (我妈妈画的)图画 = a picture (painted by my mother) (没有翅膀的)动物 = an animal (that has no wings) '是' is needed to link a noun and an adjectival phrase when the adjectival phrase is placed after the noun: 那幅图画 是 (我妈妈画的) = The picture was painted by my mother. 那只动物 是 (没有翅膀的) = The animal has no wings. greenmoon55 Posted January 15, 2008 at 12:06 PM Report Posted January 15, 2008 at 12:06 PM I agree with #5. There mush be something wrong and I can't understand the sentence. Quote
hoosdathu Posted January 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM Report Posted January 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM the structure is actually "是……的",not just "的" at the end. compare 菜恩斯特王国的余躲在这个村子里是绝对错不了的 with 菜恩斯特王国的余躲在这个村子里()绝对错不了() both convey the same info, ie "The remnants of the Ernst Kingdom are definitely hiding in this village" but using 是……的 adds empasis to the phrase 绝对错不了 and implies the level of confidence in the speaker. PS: the 余 should be 余孽 (remnants, missing character 孽) Quote
