WoAiJolinTsai Posted December 27, 2007 at 04:22 AM Report Posted December 27, 2007 at 04:22 AM Are there alot of PRC/Taiwan/other Chinese speakers using Xbox live? I really wanna play video games, but all my time is taken up studying chinese. I figure I can kill two birds with one stone if possible. Would I have to buy the asian version of Xbox 360 and Chinese games? I think it would be worth it if possible. Anyone else have this idea? I really wanna play Halo3 Thanks! Quote
xuechengfeng Posted December 27, 2007 at 05:32 AM Report Posted December 27, 2007 at 05:32 AM Personally, I doubt many kids in the PRC have an Xbox360. I live a fairly comfortable life in America and even I don't want to shell out the money for it. Being one who has frequented many internet bars in China, I would presume that most kids just stick to paying a couple of kuai an hour to play computer games all night long. I could just be generalizing though... Quote
WoAiJolinTsai Posted December 27, 2007 at 09:31 PM Author Report Posted December 27, 2007 at 09:31 PM There's other mandarin speaking nations besides the PRC. I know for a fact that the Xbox 360 is a high seller in both Taiwan and Singapore. Anyone else? Quote
xuechengfeng Posted December 28, 2007 at 08:08 PM Report Posted December 28, 2007 at 08:08 PM Let me just spell it out for you... 1) 13.45 million consoles have been sold. That market is primarily made up of North America, Europe, and Japan. In the countries you are listing, there are probably some Xbox 360 sales, but the vast majority of Asian countries aren't extraordinarly rich, so there probably is not a high volume of Mandarin speakers on Xbox Live. 2) If you're in a Mandarin speaking country, there is no use for the Xbox 360 to learn. If you are living in the West, then even if you have Mandarin speakers on Xbox Live, you have to account for the time difference. 3) Even if you encounter Mandarin speakers, are you going to be able to understand them and converse? If yes, then what's the point of asking your question? If no, what are you going to do, play the video game, hear a new word, and ask them to hold on while you look it up? Why don't you forget about this idea and just ration your time accordingly, so you can have ample time to study and play video games? I don't see how this question is anything more than an excuse to have more video game time because I highly doubt that even if you find Mandarin speakers on Xbox Live, it's really going to help your Chinese. WoAiJolinTsai Posted December 29, 2007 at 12:07 AM Author Report Posted December 29, 2007 at 12:07 AM Ugh.. does anyone else have anything to say about it? 1) Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world... there are millions of rich people in China.. Xbox 360 is sold there 2) People play Xbox live at all hours of the day... especially more popular games like Halo 3) I will be able to understand them and converse. I will understand 99% of it and if not, I will look it up later and/or forget about it. Ever hear of speaking practice? Quote

BrandeX Posted December 29, 2007 at 01:25 AM Report Posted December 29, 2007 at 01:25 AM I'm not sure if you are also in China, but here when I walk around the mall and electronics stores, almost every single console being sold is a Nintendo DS, PSP, or PS2 (that's right still the older stuff + handhelds). No, Xbox or 360's that I am really noticing, I think I saw a place selling them once, but I am not sure. While the American systems are indeed sold worldwide, truly it is almost entirely in the West. Most asians still go with japanese (or cloned) systems. Another big issue, is home console players are also a minority here. It has been a bit of fun playing old SNES and N64 games with my gf her who has never played Super Mario Bros. and such before. Chinese kids go to school about 29 hours a day, and around 11 days a week Most kids just don't play video games that I have talked to (which is many since I teach them, and I ask since it's my hobby), unless its some crummy flash based games on the internet, or maybe a couple real PC titles if they somehow find the time, but most do not have or never had a console. Those old enough to be in school are too busy with either college or work to care about consoles I guess, but I do sometimes see people with PSP's on the bus. About every 30 feet or so (just kidding but its a lot) there is a ton of internet cafe's along the streets and they ALL have pictures of Counterstrike on the outside. I would recommend finding some way to connect to chinese people playing counterstrike online with your PC if possible. Also there is many who are playing MMO's. Warcraft is very popular here, if you can get the chinese version and connect to their servers. Frankly most people are computing, and not "consoling". On a side note, does anyone know if the iQue DS is a "real" Nintendo DS, or a clone? It's all I have found in retail stores here, and I am not certain if its a common copy, or just the market branding used in China. Quote
xuechengfeng Posted December 29, 2007 at 02:43 AM Report Posted December 29, 2007 at 02:43 AM Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you only wanted opinions if they were telling you what you wanted to hear. Umm, let's see what we can do... Yes, I'm sure that you will find millions upon millions of Mandarin speakers on Xbox Live at your convenience to practice with in a manner that is comprehensible to you!! You should never study again and merely devote all time to Xbox Live with Mandarin speakers!! Is that better? Quote
cdn_in_bj Posted December 30, 2007 at 05:12 PM Report Posted December 30, 2007 at 05:12 PM I'm not sure if you are also in China, but here when I walk around the mall and electronics stores, almost every single console being sold is a Nintendo DS, PSP, or PS2 (that's right still the older stuff + handhelds). There are a lot of Nintendo Wii's being sold too! No, Xbox or 360's that I am really noticing, I think I saw a place selling them once, but I am not sure. While the American systems are indeed sold worldwide, truly it is almost entirely in the West Is there another Xbox 360 hack besides the DVD player hack (which only works with certain firmware versions)? In addition, there is also the issue of region locking and NTSC vs. PAL. If not, then you'd have to buy imported games in addition to the console. Quote
