Ian_Lee Posted May 11, 2004 at 12:42 AM Report Posted May 11, 2004 at 12:42 AM After retiring for 12 years, the King of Cantopop -- Sam Hui -- is coming back! He just sets a record in HK by selling out the 60,000 concert tickets on one single day. Sam, who was the harbinger of Cantopop in the late '60s, had almost half of his songs written in Cantonese-style Chinese (the other latecomers are actually singing Cantopop in Mandarin written script). At an age of 55, Sam seems attracting a lot of new fans. Some Mainland tour groups even suggest to buy out all the tickets in 3 concerts. Quote
pazu Posted May 11, 2004 at 01:50 AM Report Posted May 11, 2004 at 01:50 AM I never really like him... but don't count me in, he's really popular in Hong Kong... Quote
Ian_Lee Posted May 11, 2004 at 04:05 AM Author Report Posted May 11, 2004 at 04:05 AM Pazu: Just like the other King -- Elvis, both sound/sounded like chewing some chestnuts in their mouths when they sing/sang. Quote
Quest Posted May 11, 2004 at 06:15 AM Report Posted May 11, 2004 at 06:15 AM I like Sam, his style is truly cantonese. You can hardly find those 白话 songs now, except.. maybe in the somewhat distorted LMF or MP4 raps. Quote
TSkillet Posted May 11, 2004 at 06:35 PM Report Posted May 11, 2004 at 06:35 PM At Ye Shanghai in Pacific Place, on Thursday and Friday nights they have live music (singers) - and there's a guy who sounds exactly like Sam Hui. I like listening to his music - it reminds me of visiting Hong Kong every summer in the early 80s. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted May 11, 2004 at 07:28 PM Author Report Posted May 11, 2004 at 07:28 PM I heard that the verses of Sam's songs are topics of Social Study in college. Quote
