badr Posted January 7, 2008 at 03:23 AM Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 at 03:23 AM does anyone here have experience with China Unicom CDMA internet access for laptops? and even better, is anyone using it with a mac? this is more specifically for Beijing but I'd love to hear it if anyone got it done on the mac outside of the jing. I found this blurb online in another site: ** finally, after a long wait, in China you can buy a CDMA modem that works with the new Intel Macs: the Vtion V1819. ** but it's the only reference online thanks y'all
tallynole Posted January 7, 2008 at 04:21 AM Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 at 04:21 AM Hey Badr, long time mate! Have you tried asking over at beimac.com ? They might be able to point you in the right direction
roddy Posted January 7, 2008 at 07:05 AM Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 at 07:05 AM Are you specifically looking for a data card solution, or would a CDMA1X (or for that matter GPRS/EDGE) phone connected over Bluetooth be possible? I've looked at data cards for my (XP) machine, but decided against them as you only get Internet on your computer that way. However, I have my fairly old SE W800i set up as a GPRS modem over Bluetooth for both laptop and PDA, which means I get Internet on all three devices. I've no idea how easy it is to pair a Mac with a bluetooth phone, but I would have thought it would be at least as easy as finding a Mac-friendly data card solution here. Probably pricier though, unless you already have a bluetooth GPRS (slow) or CDMA1X (faster) phone. Could also connect via cable if you don't have bluetooth and can find the correct drivers. badr Posted January 7, 2008 at 02:28 PM Author Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 at 02:28 PM Hey Roddy, Yeah! I am looking for a data card solution! I have successfully connected my phone (china mobile GPRS) to the mac and the palm as well but it's too slow and flimsy for my taste. I need more bandwith to handle all the emails. the WCDMA standard supposedly supports up to 200 kbps which would fit my needs perfectly. I'm gonna stop by China Unicom this week and see what they got to offer.
roddy Posted January 7, 2008 at 02:42 PM Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 at 02:42 PM Fair enough. Is WCDMA widely available? That's full 3G, and there aren't any 3G licenses out yet, although there are various 'trials'. Would be interested to hear if you get that up and running. I suspect for decent coverage / roaming the best may still be the 2.5G CDMA1X and EDGE.
