These may be the most used words in the state controlled Chinese media - but not the most used words by Chinese people. That would be much more interesting and a true indication of popularity.

I agree that at list of the words or phrases most used by 老百姓 would be interesting but I must beg to differ that such a list would be a true indication of popularity (except in the most literal sense of the word). The list of most common words and phrases in the media is itself of interest and, I find, a useful reminder of some of the important events to have occured in 2007 and some of the important policies which truly affect at least the urban population to have been implemented last year.

I would hazard a guess that, given the influence of mass media wherever we, many of the phrases would appear in a list of the words/phrases most discussed (this is what I take you to mean by "used") by Chinese people. Sadly, such a list is impossible to compile. Nevertheless, I think many of the phrases or at least the topics would be the same; for example 嫦娥一号, 第二套房贷, 廉租房, 劳动合同法 or 带薪休假 (not to mention the Olympics).

For slang, i vote for "河蟹" , "和諧" and "牛". That's hugely popular in internet these days.
