imcgraw Posted January 17, 2008 at 01:40 AM Report Posted January 17, 2008 at 01:40 AM For a very limited time MIT is offering slots in a paid user-study of a new Mandarin vocabulary building tool. At least 1 year of Chinese experience is required. The study can be completed from anywhere with a fast enough Internet connection. The slots will be given out on a first-come-first-serve basis. A 10$ Amazon gift certificate will be given to participants who complete all the tasks (which should take between 1/2 an hour to an hour). You will need: 1. At least one year of Mandarin experience. (Must be comfortable with pinyin, must NOT be a native Chinese speaker) 2. A reasonably fast Internet connection that can handle voice applications 3. A microphone 4. A Java-enabled Internet browser (Java is easy to download if you don't already have it) Unfortunately our system does not yet work on the Mac. Also, it's likely that the system will work better if you are in the United States, as the lag from accessing it overseas might make the user-experience a little frustrating. If you'd like to test whether or not your browser is capable of handling these requirements, try playing a game now at: http://web.sls.csail.mit.edu/chinesecards/. You can, for example, click on the 'animals' category and choose "Word War" from the game menu that appears. At the bottom of the screen example sentences/translations will guide you through what you are supposed to say. When you're ready to sign up for the study, check out the following web site: http://web.sls.csail.mit.edu/chinesecards/?signup=true&group=493466202 If you already have a Chinese Cards account, you can sign up for the study with the same email address. Feel free to pass this opportunity on to your friends/students. Thanks, Chinese Cards Administrators, chinesecards@csail.mit.edu Spoken Language Systems Group M.I.T. imcgraw Posted January 18, 2008 at 04:25 AM Author Report Posted January 18, 2008 at 04:25 AM Well phewwy on you! Agreed. We'll get there eventually... it has something to do with the way that Mac's stream audio using Java. Everything audio file we receive sounds something like a tiger growl because the sampling is not right... or maybe it's a leopard! Quote
imcgraw Posted January 21, 2008 at 05:16 PM Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 at 05:16 PM Just so that people know the gift certificate has been bumped up to 15$ (Well worth it for 45 minutes of your time if you fit the requirements). The study will only be open for another 3 days however. So get there quick. Quote
TezUK Posted January 21, 2008 at 09:02 PM Report Posted January 21, 2008 at 09:02 PM I completed the study, only took 30 minutes or less. Very interesting to see some future technology, worked really well actually! Quote
imcgraw Posted January 24, 2008 at 06:58 PM Author Report Posted January 24, 2008 at 06:58 PM There is only 1 day left in this user study, and only 4 more slots so if you have been putting it off, this is your last chance. Quote
