taijidan Posted January 18, 2008 at 10:10 PM Report Posted January 18, 2008 at 10:10 PM I saw this on buzzwords recently and it got me thinking. 吊模(diao4mo2) street hoaxer, beguiler The term refers to mostly young women who are hired to lure people from street into cafe bars, restaurants or dubious places where the victims will face steep rip-off or blackmail. http://www.shanghaidaily.com/buzzword/default.asp Last time I was in Beijing - shopping in Wangfujing, I was approached by two young ladies who gave me a spiel that they were English students and after a some chit-chat invited me to accompany them for a drink. Anyway it seemed a little odd and I still had a lot of shopping to do before meeting some friends at the other end of town - so declined on the drink. I carried on shopping an about half an hour later - was approached by another 2 girls - same story. So I was just wondering - did a lot of people have the same experience? And is that really some students that want to practice their English or some kind of scam?
Madot Posted January 19, 2008 at 01:52 AM Report Posted January 19, 2008 at 01:52 AM I read about this scam on this forum in 2006 and then the very same thing happened to me precisely in Wangfujing! That year the spiel was "we are art students". Apparently it did happen a lot, often leading to being charged ridiculous amounts of money for a simple pot of tea. That sort of thing. If you do a search, you will probably come across the old thread. Steer clear! Mado
