liuzhou Posted January 20, 2008 at 08:35 AM Report Posted January 20, 2008 at 08:35 AM Does anyone know if it is still possible to travel from China to Europe (England) by cargo ship? It certainly was ten years ago. Some friends did it. I think with P&O. A google search is vague at best. Specific information like where to book etc. seems impossible to find. (This is only partly inspired by London bound planes crashing in Heathrow!) Quote
adrianlondon Posted January 20, 2008 at 12:31 PM Report Posted January 20, 2008 at 12:31 PM This is only partly inspired by London bound planes crashing in Heathrow! One person broke their leg and that was sliding down the shute after the plane had crashed. Everyone else was fine. I'd still prefer that than a couple of weeks on a P&O cargo ship ;) A cruise ship would be different, but a cargo ship? No restaurants, no swimming pool ... Quote
roddy Posted January 20, 2008 at 01:05 PM Report Posted January 20, 2008 at 01:05 PM I found this. Taking times and prices from this page, you could go Yantian (never heard of it) to La Havre (vaguely rings a bell) in 18 days for EUR1800. I can see it being a 'fun to do once' kind of thing, or great if you are trying to finish a novel. Quote
liuzhou Posted January 20, 2008 at 01:14 PM Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 at 01:14 PM Thanks Roddy. The first one in that link seems to go to / from Southampton. Only takes about a month. Quote
roddy Posted January 20, 2008 at 01:23 PM Report Posted January 20, 2008 at 01:23 PM Yeah, I was looking at the return trip as I figured that was the direction you'd be going. That's only 18 days, but less stops - not sure how much you get to see on the stops though. The report on that page makes it all sound quite fun: When I come back to my cabin, I find a message on my door; the Captain is serving champagne in the offers’ mess before lunch! A dozen young officers enter, one after the other, into the long beautifully decorated room. We are also served small appetizers whilst we mingle together. It's pricier than I'd assumed it would be - I'd always thought of this as a dirt cheap way to travel that had been killed off by affordable long haul flights - but it looks like the accommodation is pretty decent, you get fed well and you get to gaze languidly off at the horizon all day. Are you seriously tempted, or just idly speculating? Quote

self-taught-mba Posted January 20, 2008 at 05:15 PM Report Posted January 20, 2008 at 05:15 PM Slower boats to China as ship owners save fuel By Erik Kirschbaum Sat Jan 19, 8:22 PM ET BERLIN (Reuters) - Oil at more than $90 a barrel is concentrating minds in the shipping industry. Higher fuel costs and mounting pressure to curb emissions are leading modern merchant fleets to rediscover the ancient power of the sail. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/climate_ships_dc;_ylt=As9WW1StmC_09HhtRlOcC0gDW7oF Might change your time budget somewhat.
