Adso translation system -- C++ port

Hi everyone,

I posted earlier about this study-ad/gist translation system I've been hacking away at, but thought I'd post a new note to announce that it's now ported to C++ and is fast and furious (the average Xinhua article takes 7-8 seconds on average). Being faster than Babelfish works for me.... :)

The other big change is a simplified install process. If you're running Linux already, it should only take a minute or two to get running if you already have MYSQL installed. The software should also compile under Windows, although I haven't tried. I'll probably take a crack at doing so this weekend.

The software comes with a backend database/dictionary that has about 115,000 words available under a noncommercial open source license, so it might be of interest to others doing similar work. It's also a bit unique in classifying many words according to their parts of speech (in both English and Chinese).

And now the plea for help: I'd like to put this up somewhere so that others can use it if possible. What I'm missing is a decent *nix server with MYSQL loaded on it that can be used to offer access? Anyone out there interested in helping set this up?

Cheers,

I'm very interested in the database! Can you make it available on your site in .sql format? I'm thinking about working on software for collaborative translation, and this might really help.

Can the program still run on perl?

Hi Jonathan,

Email me if you want the perl scripts, I still have them but not online. Incidentally, if you're a linguist/programmer working on something similar and can see a way to improve the output, drop a line.

Hi everyone,

In the spirit of making two posts a day... Adso is now available for Windows as well. I know a few people have been interested but unable to use the program because of the Linux requirement. This should solve that problem.

It comes with good and bad news. The good news is that the installation under Windows is dead easy and takes about five minutes. The bad news is that the application runs much more slowly under Windows. I'm not sure the source of the problem, but translating an average Xinhua article on my XP-running laptop takes about two minutes. *sigh*

Still, anyone interested should feel free to grab the Windows port at:

Feel free to get in touch if there are any problems.
