simonlaing Posted January 24, 2008 at 07:02 AM Report Posted January 24, 2008 at 07:02 AM Hey people, Since recently I've been on a spending binge and my wife has to work for part of the holiday I am staying in town. Here are some of the things I'm planning on doing and wonder what others are doing (other than travel some where else on crowded trains)? I am stocking up on DVD's going to watch the 24 series last two seasons I missed, and Westwing, win in China.Plus lots of movies. Arrange some gaming in the Net bar with some old Chinese friends. Get some poker games with other old hands still around. Let off fireworks with the in-laws. Watch the English speaking competition which is usually on around this time (I used to be a teacher.) twiddle my thumbs. Eat lots of dumplings and fruit. Other ideas? I feel like by the third day I will be out of ideas. have fun, SImon:) Quote
heifeng Posted January 24, 2008 at 07:42 AM Report Posted January 24, 2008 at 07:42 AM I'm going to keep working on my pronunciation for the putonghua ceshi until my roommate is ready to kill me:mrgreen: ...and keep to my new years resolutions hehe Quote
MartinF Posted January 24, 2008 at 08:07 AM Report Posted January 24, 2008 at 08:07 AM My girlfriend may or may not be in town during the holiday. But in any case, I'd like to go on some day trips and see some areas surrounding Beijing. Possibly a snow resort or something like that. Other than that, socializing with friends and trying to take advantage of all Beijing offers. Quote
roddy Posted January 24, 2008 at 08:22 AM Report Posted January 24, 2008 at 08:22 AM In the past, I have: Overloaded on DVDs - 24 is a good one as it's suited to long viewing sessions, not sure that the West Wing lends itself so well to that. The last season of 24 was very weak though. If I hadn't already seen them I'd by stocking up on The Shield, Sopranos, The Wire rather than 24. Gamed: I'm generally more a fan of Civ / Sim City type stuff than role-playing, but if you want to skip a week and have no idea of where the time went, Oblivion fits the bill. I had to delete this, it was eating my life. Get out and about: Would never go properly traveling at Spring Festival, but it can be quite fun to avoid the tourist-filled parts of town and walk around in peace and quiet. Oh wait, firecrackers. Forget I spoke. Get things done: I like to make a list of half-finished projects, textbooks I've been meaning to work through, and . . . no wait, that never happened. Quote
heifeng Posted January 24, 2008 at 08:30 AM Report Posted January 24, 2008 at 08:30 AM Oh wait, firecrackers. Forget I spoke. omg....I amost forgot about this too...more firecracker dodging down the streets. Oh joy! Quote
roddy Posted February 3, 2008 at 09:32 AM Report Posted February 3, 2008 at 09:32 AM Additional: Stock up on food before the supermarkets become a living hell and the restaurants close. And if you do go to the supermarket, don't get stuck behind an argumentative woman with an annoying voice with some pointless, queue-delaying chip on her shoulder. And yes, I have just got back from the supermarket Quote
liuzhou Posted February 3, 2008 at 09:42 AM Report Posted February 3, 2008 at 09:42 AM Stock up on food before the supermarkets become a living hell Bit late for that advice. They have been living hell since forever. I got stuck behind some senile man today who was refusing to accept coins in his change because he had a hole in his pocket. The checkout girl had no small denomination notes. So we all waited till this moron got his 5 mao in his preferred trouser friendly format. I will be going to bed for the duration. Quote
xianxuesheng Posted February 4, 2008 at 01:32 PM Report Posted February 4, 2008 at 01:32 PM what do you do if you have no chinese friends/family to celebrate with? this is my first chinese new year in china and i'm hoping there's "something" i can do to "experience" it. like parade, large-scale fireworks demo, bar where other lonely foreigners gather for the guo-ing, etc... really don't care how cheesy/loud/obnoxious - the prospect of watching dvd's by myself in my hotel room is still less appealing... thanks for your suggestions Quote
cdn_in_bj Posted February 5, 2008 at 03:54 AM Report Posted February 5, 2008 at 03:54 AM You don't mention where you are, but if you're in Beijing you can check out the various "miao hui" (庙会) that go on throughout the week. It's like a big outdoor fair with a bunch of vendors selling pretty much the same stuff(*), a variety of food, and lots and lots of people. 庙会 has traditional roots, but I wouldn't be able to tell you what those would be. large-scale fireworks demo Trust me, you won't miss this when it happens. *Although last year I happened upon a vendor selling Galileo thermometers, of all things.
