mandarinstudent Posted January 25, 2008 at 02:54 AM Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 at 02:54 AM I've searched this website and didn't find any definitive answers concerning transcripts for television shows. They seem hard to find. For example, if I go to google and type "Frasier transcript", transcripts are plentiful. If I type in 金婚台词 I can't seem to find anything. Is there a website that is dedicated to television show transcripts?
BrandeX Posted January 25, 2008 at 07:26 AM Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 at 07:26 AM search for "(showname) subtitle", then open the subtitle file i notepad, and you can read it.
imron Posted January 25, 2008 at 08:13 AM Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 at 08:13 AM Did you try this advice for the program mandarinstudent mentioned? The problem is that there don't seem to be transcripts or subtitles available, the latter probably because most subtitles for Chinese TV shows are part of the actual footage rather than stored on a separate subtitle track, even when you buy the proper DVDs. roddy Posted January 25, 2008 at 08:22 AM Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 at 08:22 AM Yeah, there's an old topic on here where someone - atitarev? - spent ages trying to work with subtitles, but a major obstacle was that they just aren't out there in text format. It seems to be the case that Chinese shows don't generate the kind of fan enthusiasm to transcribe and make available entire scripts. There was one for some show floating around - can't remember which one, 我爱我家? but I think that's the only 'complete' one I've seen. Basically the companies aren't going to make them available, nobody is typing them in, and there's no easy way to export them from DVDs / VCDs. You may be able to find some subtitles in .srt format - do a search on here for srt and there are three earlier topics referencing them. Tends to be more for movies than TV shows though. Actually, if I recall correctly, 我爱我家 was the show mandarinstudent was looking for last time Wow, good memory...Never did find a precise transcript. My wife and I were going to change the script we found to match what they actually say on the show, but it was just too much effort. You know, I bet if one of you higher level students of Chinese were to transcribe a few television shows by hand, other students would be willing to pay for them because they can't be found on the internet. Just a thought...

It's the sort of thing rabid fans will happily do, however for everyone else there are probably better uses for that time. If you're willing to pay though, you might have other options. Are you still teaching? I'm sure you'd have a few students willing to transcribe the shows for RMB 10 an hour or something.
