Worth Spending a night in Shenzhen?

Recommended Posts

I'll be in HK on the 8th and am thinking I'll either catch a flight from Shenzhen to Xi'an on that day or stay for a night in Shenzhen meaning I'll spend the day there. Anything worth doing there? Something that'll entertain me for a day?

The 8th will be day three of the public holiday, so it will be pretty quiet around here. I'm not sure if the shops will even be open, does anyone know? You could go to a flower market, if that's your cup of tea, and that's about it.

I just thought, hotel occupancy will probably be low, so you might get a good deal on an upmarket hotel room. Then go out to pamper yourself with a few hours massage.

There's several things to do in Shenzhen. It's a well developed city and so has a good range of shops and restaurants. It's also a good base form which to visit other places. If you are flying into HK but out of Shenzhen then you need not stay in Shenzhen it's self. You could entertain yourself in Hong Kong for the day before heading to you Shenzhen hotel in the evening. Macau is just a short boat trip away and many people day-trip to Macau. I did that myself during the October 1st break. After flying in, I stayed in Macau then took the boat back to Shenzhen in time to connect with my flight. I also managed to fit in a trip to Zhuhai. This town is good for shopping for bargains. There are fast frequent ferries interlinking HK airport, Shenzhen, Macau, HK city, Zhuahi, and other cities nearby.

I don't know why but Shenzhen is the place I hate most in China. Granted there are a lot of places I haven't been but there's somehting about Shenzen that makes me uncomfortable.

If I were you I'd just skip it. Spend your limited time in HK, which is 1000X the city Shenzen is.

Definitely stay away from Window to the World. It was like going to one of those old miniature golf places with fake grass curling edges, windmills that don't spin, dried up ponds and peeling paint. Not much to do in Shenzhen that you can't do in other big cities. Agree w/ mpallard; I'd spend an extra day in HK.

I agree. If you go to Xian anyway spend your time in HK. If you don't, you will regret having missed your last chance of western civilization.

You can cheap (US$25) places to stay in Jordan or Yaumatei. Small, but OK for a night or two.

i get the impression there isn't too much to do in shenzhen. well i've already organised my flight to xi'an for the day after I arrive in HongKong... so I'll spend the day in Hong Kong and hopefully find somewhere nice to spend the night in Shenzhen.
