Luobot Posted February 12, 2008 at 08:25 PM Report Posted February 12, 2008 at 08:25 PM HarperCollins is putting *some* books online for free. Their idea is that after you browse through the book, you’ll want to buy the physical book. This strategy is obviously just an experiment, at this point, and one which I hope is a success. Imagine being able to browse through the NPRC or Integrated Chinese online in full! It will help answer a lot of questions people have about whether or not they want to commit to this or that study program. References to particular points in the book for discussion purposes would also be much easier. At the moment, it appears that there’s a small selection of books available, and none are Chinese language related. Here is a link to the main page It’s also possible to include a book electronically on a website, much the same way that a Youtube video is included. Which brings me to a suggestion for Roddy: >> Shoot HarperCollins an email suggesting that they include more Mandarin language study books, which he will offer to make available on this site for forum members to view, discuss, and if they wish, to purchase. EDIT: At present, no Chinese titles are online. Titles that are online may only be available for a month. Here is an article. Quote
roddy Posted February 13, 2008 at 12:08 AM Report Posted February 13, 2008 at 12:08 AM Sorry, I don't see how you get to the full version of any of the books - ie here's a Chinese Dictionary, but I don't see links for anything more than a text excerpt. Quote
Luobot Posted February 13, 2008 at 01:47 AM Author Report Posted February 13, 2008 at 01:47 AM I see what you mean. The links that I had originally tried were from the main page. Such as: http://browseinside.harpercollins.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780061338809&HCHP=WitchPortbello_Sidebar1_FullAccess_021108 http://browseinside.harpercollins.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780061209130&HCHP=DreamBlue_Sidebar2_FullAccess_021108 http://browseinside.harpercollins.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780061537301&HCHP=VotersGuide_Sidebar3_FullAccess_021108 Apparently what's actually available is much more limited than what I had first thought ... oh, well. This article indicates that titles will only be online for a month at a time. I'll edit my original post. Quote
roddy Posted February 13, 2008 at 02:09 AM Report Posted February 13, 2008 at 02:09 AM Does seem like there's some decent stuff available, but I'm not seeing anything China-relevant, so I'm going to move this. If anyone comes across anything they think useful they can start a new topic. The front page for the Browse Online thing is here. Quote
