82riceballs Posted February 13, 2008 at 12:19 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 12:19 AM After being on this forum for so long, I find it stupid that I've never thought to ask how "Forum" is translated into Chinese. I've looked it up, but I think the translations always seem to be bent towards an actual meeting where people host discussions: 討論會, 公開討論的場所, etc What do Chinese people in real life say? 論壇? or just BBS? Also, how would "CHinese forums" be translated?

huisheng Posted February 13, 2008 at 03:37 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 03:37 AM 揭示板 sounds like Japanese.
self-taught-mba Posted February 13, 2008 at 03:53 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 03:53 AM Not to be confused with 论谈, which also has the same pronunciation and for me at least would seem like a more intuitive choice if I didn't know the characters. imron Posted February 13, 2008 at 03:57 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 03:57 AM And don't forget, it's trivial to change your user interface language on the fly, meaning you can pick up all sorts of relevant 论坛 related vocab. studychinese Posted February 13, 2008 at 04:04 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 04:04 AM 揭示板 sounds like Japanese. It is. I was hoping the Hanzi usage would be the same, but Chinese and Japanese usage is very different. Japanese and Korean usage is very similar, so I was able to learn Korean very quickly. atitarev Posted February 13, 2008 at 04:20 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 04:20 AM If you want to say the Japanese 掲示板 (keijiban) in Chinese, you have to change the first character and get 揭示板 (jiēshìbǎn - bulletin board). In Japanese, it's normally フォーラム (fo:ramu), borrowed from English. 掲 (Japanese simplified) = 揭 (Chinese)

82riceballs Posted February 17, 2008 at 09:53 PM Author Report Share Posted February 17, 2008 at 09:53 PM Thanks! So 論壇 it is! Would Chinese-forums be translated as 中國論壇?
atitarev Posted February 18, 2008 at 01:48 AM Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 at 01:48 AM I did not insist on 揭示板, only stating that this word exists in Chinese and there is an entry in the ABC dictionary. 论坛 is, of course the most common word. Would Chinese-forums be translated as 中國論壇? 中国论坛 (simpl. version) is correct and is already taken : http://www.zhongguobbs.com/
Lu Posted February 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM For Chinese-forums I'd say 中華論壇, more of a forum on all things Chinese than a forum of China.

I agree with this.... but I think that this is also taken *sniff* >> i googled itI think we ought to get a real chinese name of this website... huisheng Posted February 18, 2008 at 03:51 PM Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 at 03:51 PM From my association with tons of 灌水坛, I'm pretty sure this is a forum specifically for people to post up content that isn't necessarily meaningless but doesn't concern the majority of the forum-goers. Posting can include copied and pasted articles and images, rants, nonsense and stuff. 灌水's English equivalent in a sense is spam.

The forums are what they are.
