LaoZhang Posted February 13, 2008 at 01:43 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 01:43 AM Usually when I'm writing in Chinese using Pinyin IME, I get a candidate window right where I'm typing, I select my character and I'm done. But once in a while, a different looking candidate window will open up in the upper left corner of my screen. When I hit ENTER, it just disappears and I don't get anything. I retype what I want and then the regular candidate window works. This just happened in QQ. For some reason I can't remember if it's happened in other programs, but I know it has happened before and I just haven't thought to ask about it. Does this happen to anyone else or am I possibly doing something wrong? I only have CH (Pinyin IME) and English as my input methods. Running XP SP2. Appreciate any thoughts... gougou Posted February 13, 2008 at 02:05 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 02:05 AM I get this once in a while. I think it only happens when no text box is active, so that the IME doesn't know where to put the stuff you're typing.
imron Posted February 13, 2008 at 02:09 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 02:09 AM Appreciate any thoughts...It might not solve your problem, however the Google or Sogou Pinyin IMEs are far superior to the MS one.
LaoZhang Posted February 13, 2008 at 07:02 PM Author Report Share Posted February 13, 2008 at 07:02 PM thanks for the tips. gougou, would you mind telling me a little more about the other methods , what you don't about MS input, etc? I guess I don't know what I'm missing. thx.
gougou Posted February 14, 2008 at 01:10 AM Report Share Posted February 14, 2008 at 01:10 AM I guess you meant imron there? I get along with the MS input quite fine - even though at home, I have the Google IME installed as well. (However, after installing the Google one, I found that it didn't work with the vocabulary trainer I wrote, so rather than rewriting the program, I chose to stick with the old IME.) imron Posted February 14, 2008 at 01:13 AM Report Share Posted February 14, 2008 at 01:13 AM Well, I'm not gougou, but biggest difference between sogou/google and the MS IME is that the former have advanced sentence prediction, meaning that you can just type long sentences of toneless pinyin and it will almost always choose the correct characters from context. The MS sentence prediction is better than nothing, but lags far behind that of Sogou/Google.

self-taught-mba Posted February 14, 2008 at 02:05 AM Report Share Posted February 14, 2008 at 02:05 AM . . . have advanced sentence prediction, meaning that you can just type long sentences of toneless pinyin and it will almost always choose the correct characters from context. The MS sentence prediction is better than nothing, but lags far behind that of Sogou/Google. And that is precisely why at our Chinese in school in Beijing (plug time:mrgreen: ), we teach people about the differences between Chinese IMEs when we teach typing. It can have serious implications for your learning. If you are a Chinese learner you can actually deprive yourself of a good learning opportunity because some of these have become really good at guessing/predicting . (And they are not always accurate anyway) Just something to keep in mind for those of you that are learning.
