i'm trying to figure out what would be more useful if i wanted to visit/live in china one day.

right now our course is teaching traditional characters, with the option to switch to simplified at the next level (but still be able to read both)

most people in mainland China used Simp Chinese characters, but switching from Trad to Simp is easy, spend some time to check out the list, then you can read and write Simp Chinese without much problems.
