TLI Taiwan or equivalent in South China

Hi friends, wanted your opinion on TLI Taiwan and particularly the living expense there...

I have been a self learner for the past 1 1/2 years. Completed Pimsleur I, II and III including the Characters. Completed NPCR I. Completed Zhang Pengpeng's books Rapid Literacy in Chinese for beginners, A Modern Book of Thousand Characters.

My conversation is limited to what I learnt in Pimsleur but I can recognize 1200 characters.

According to my old plans, I was supposed to go to Keats Kunming in November 2007 but due to work commitments, I had to postpone my trip. I will be resigning from my job in November 2008 and hope to attend Conversational Mandarin lessons from December 2008 to April 2009 which is the period when North China is extremely cold. This in turn limits my choice to a few places like Keats and I also noticed that the fees of Keats is very expensive. Thus I was wondering whether TLI Taiwan would be a good choice. The pros would be that the quality of instruction would be fantastic and the weather in Taiwan is also warmer. The obvious cons is the expense. I am willing to spend US$ 6000-7000 during my stay in Taiwan. Considering that TLI Taiwan centres charge US$ 12/ hr of instruction and assuming that I do 3 hrs per day, how many days can I stretch my money in Taiwan.....

BTW can anybody also recommend any school in South China having the same standards as TLI.:help:help

A bump after 2 days?

And your post from this post here seems to answer it already. Seems you've made your mind up.

From you:

I might as well spend some more and go to one of the TLI centres, even in Taiwan

Sorry for the bump, didn't want my thread to get buried.:(

Well I haven't made up my mind on where to go. I wanted to go for a 4 month course. Keats would charge me almost USD 4500 which is expensive for Kunming. I am still looking for a more affordable place in South China failing which I migh go to Taiwan. But I am not really sure about the expenses in Taiwan. I have also looked at other options like TLI Shanghai (124 RMB/hr )and they are probably more expensive than TLI Taiwan....

I really hope someone can tell be about the lodging and food expenses in Kaoshiung in Taiwan....

Guangzhou isn't South China?

Sorry sir, I just realized that Guangzhou was written in Mandarin on the TLI program locations place and so I did not notice it. I am going to send an email to the contact. BTW don't you think that Guangzhou might be as expensive as Shanghai or Taiwan...

So Guangzhou, Shanghai and Taiwan might all have similar expenses. Then I assume that Cantonese is spoken in Guangzhou while Hokkien is spoken in Taiwan. Now I have to decide which to choose among the two:( Can't really decide for now......
