speldwiday Posted February 23, 2008 at 05:42 AM Report Posted February 23, 2008 at 05:42 AM Fellow historians, I'm hoping to get an early start on my undergraduate military history thesis and was looking to get some suggestions for a topic. I would like to research an important tactical/operational level engagement for the Chinese either during the Second Sino-Japanese war or during the Chinese Civil war. I might be getting a little over-ambitious, but I think it would be really neat to write about a significant battle that has not yet been thoroughly researched, studied, or recieved in-depth coverage. I've only just begun to take a look at what is available out there, but the only engagement I've found so far that fits the profile is the battle of Pingxingguan (1937). Any other suggestions? I've also been told about a battle that occurred after the Huaihai, Pingjin, and Liaoshen campaigns (1948,1949). I'm not sure about the name of the engagement, but it happened after the KMT had pulled their forces south of the Yangtse. There, they were defended by their navy and air forces and claimed their defense was impregnable. However, the under-dog communist forces ultimately routed them (even using wooden boats at some points) and forced the nationalists from the mainland. Does anyone have any more information about this battle? Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing from you. ~bryan Quote
